Darlene Sylvia Penney

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Darlene lived a life filled with love, generosity, and compassion. In her younger years, she was a competitive speed skater, a reflection of her determination and adventurous spirit. She also worked alongside her mother at the Minneapolis Auditorium before dedicating herself to what she considered her greatest calling—raising her family.

Darlene shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with the love of her life, Allen Penney, until his passing in 2011. Together they built a loving family, and she was a devoted mother to six children, Terry Penney (Brenda) Debbie Fassett (Don) Dean Penney (Debbie) Becky Hereid (Tony) Tony (Missy)and Rhonda Penney (John). A proud grandmother to 15 grandchildren, and a cherished great-grandmother to 17 great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her world.

Darlene had a heart for giving. One of her greatest passions was crocheting afghans, and over the years she lovingly made more than 250, giving them to family, friends, and even people she barely knew if she felt they could use a little extra warmth and comfort. Every stitch reflected the kindness and love she carried in her heart.

She also loved playing bingo, where she made many dear friends and enjoyed countless hours of laughter and companionship. She delighted in searching garage sales for hidden treasures and had a special fondness for a little sparkle and bling that always brought a smile to her face.

Darlene will be remembered for her generous spirit, warm heart, and unwavering love for her family and friends. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, the beautiful afghans she created, and the love she gave so freely.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Allen Penney and daughter Debbie Fassett. She leaves behind a loving family, many treasured friends, and all those whose lives were made better simply by knowing her. Though she is no longer with us, her kindness, laughter, and love will remain in our hearts forever. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A Memorial for Darlene will be held at Gearhart Funeral Home, 11275 Foley Blvd NW, Coon Rapids, MN 55448, on Monday, August 24, 2026, with Visitation from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00 am.
