Jim was born on July 7, 1952 and grew up in Circle Pines. As one of five children, Jim was a proud son of Norman Schmidt and Dora (Elfman) Schmidt. He graduated from Circle Pines and served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He later studied and had a successful career in the computer software industry. Whether it was keeping up with technology changes at work or life changes outside of work, Jim always strived to continue to grow, learn and better himself.
A natural leader within his own family, at work, his church and beyond, his passion for helping others extended into every part of his life. His family and his faith were at the very core of who he was and guided how he lived each day. A lover of camping and hikes, he was in his element when he was in nature. He had a contagious passion for travel, could eat an entire meal of just corn on the cob and was known for his sense of humor and creative, elaborate acts designed to create special memories and show his family how much they are loved. He was a steadfast Minnesota Gopher basketball fan and his family was his biggest fan.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brother John Schmidt, sister Joyce (Schmidt) Gilman and brother-in-law Steve Pitt. Surviving are his loving wife of 28 years, Paula Leahy-Schmidt, three children and seven beloved grandchildren; Krista and Tom Streff (Isaac and Lydia), Dan and Holly Schmidt (Mackenzie, Abigail, Halley, Damien and Zakary) and Anastasia Leahy; sister Joanne (Ken) Harste and his sweet, baby sister Julie Pitt.
Jim’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Spirit of Grace Church in Coon Rapids. Visitation at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. with light refreshments to follow.
In honor of Jim’s great love of the Minnesota Gophers, the family encourages people to wear maroon or gold to the celebration. Burial at a later date at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
