Walter grew up on his parents farm close to Manson, Iowa. Loved all aspects of farming, especially John Deere tractors. Even entered a calf at the local fair. In Manson High school instead of sports he was in the shop welding. He also rented farmland to farm while in high school, thus leading to earning the FFA Iowa State District Farm award. Joined the National Guard while in high school to serve his 2 years. But was extended to 8 years! Bought his first car, a 42 Ford for $800. After marrying his sweetheart Sally, started married life farming in 1958. A daughter, Debra was born in 1960, a precious gift. A move to a larger dairy farm followed to Wesley IA. Two more daughters, Ranel and Linette soon followed in 1962 and 1963. Left farming in 1970 moved to St Cloud, MN to manage the largest Big Bear Fleet store. After managing a smaller Big Bear store at Decorah, IA. After a few more business adventures his Ace Co. Vacuum Store in Burnsville, MN was his favorite business. Said it was dirty & it sucked but liked talking to people. When retired he drove for Walser Car Co. as a dealer trade driver for fun, which also included scraping snow, cars lost in snowbanks and lost keys. The Capuchino machine kept him going.
Walters deep faith was an integral part of him that will always be remembered along with his hard-working honest nature & loving spirit. He enjoyed fishing, camping with family & friends. His green Ford diesel 97F-250 coming down the road was to warn our German Shepherd, Salby Von he’s coming home. Walter shared his popcorn with her. He was a jack of all trades, could & did fix everything. The death of daughter, Debra in 1980 was heart breaking. Walter was one of a kind, we who he loved, to those he called friends were blessed to have him in our lives. We thank God for this great gift of his life.
