It broke my heart to hear that Donald had passed away. I knew he’d been dealing with health issues for many years, and when I last saw him in Amityville on Long Island in 2022, he told me he had tried his very best to stay alive until I came. I realized then that this was probably the last time we’d see each other—but I was still hoping to visit him again this fall.

We grew up in Flint Road, in such a safe and quiet environment. Donald was always an inspiration to me—so full of creativity, curiosity, inventiveness and spirit. When my family moved to Norway in 1966, we kept in touch through letters and quite a few long phone calls. I didn’t make it back to Long Island until 1980, but when I did, the reunion was unforgettable and I visited him several times in the years that followed. Donald was still the same kind-hearted and joyful adventurer, and we shared a bit of a second youth together—beach parties, girls, cars, jam sessions, trips into New York City—and he introduced me to so many of his wonderful friends.

These are memories I’ll always carry close to my heart and I will forever miss him.
