James J. Quinn passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, at the age of 89. He was the beloved father of Donna (Stephen) and Thomas, the cherished Poppy of Kevin, Bryan (Elena), Meagan, and Eric and Rebecca, and the adored older brother of Virginia. James was predeceased by the love of his life of 63 years, Maureen, his infant sons Lawrence and Joseph, his sisters Barbara and Patricia, and his loving parents, Lawrence and Barbara.
James served in the United States Navy and Naval Reserves for a decade, ranked at Second Class Petty Officer, E-5, from 1953-1963. He worked with the VF Fighter Squadron at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn (1953-55) and then with the innovative guided missile group in Chincoteague, Virginia (1956-58) and at Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico (1958-59).
After serving in the US Navy and receiving an honorable discharge, James began his life as a father and grandfather while working as an aircraft mechanic at Pan American Airways, until retirement. James loved his 5 grandchildren, who lovingly called him Poppy. He loved to pick them up from school, take them fishing, or going to Mets games with them.
Kevin will always remember being able to have Poppy celebrated as the Veteran of the Game at a Mets game in 2018, where he was congratulated on the field and applauded by thousands of people for his service. Poppy regularly took his grandchildren on his boat, Seapup, teaching them how to fish and drive the boat. Poppy took Bryan and Meagan to get their boating licenses in their pre-teen years.
Poppy (James) will always be remembered for his funny wit, old stories, and renditions of Sweet Caroline. He will be missed immensely by his family and friends, but we know that he will be happy to see Maureen, his sons, his sisters, and parents. We know he’ll be catching fish on Seapup and watching Mets games forever.
Please honor James with your memories. Forever in our hearts, he will be.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that any charitable donations be made to the Amazin’ Mets Foundation in honor of James. Please find the direct link just below "SHOW YOUR SUPPORT"
