John grew up in Brooklyn, where he attended St. Michael’s school. A proud veteran and Purple Heart recipient, he joined the U.S. Army and was onboard the HMT ROHNA, a transport ship which was sunk by a torpedo bomb that was remotely guided from a German bomber plane. A strong swimmer, he survived several hours in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, helping many swim to life rafts, before being rescued by the USS Pioneer. Over 1100 men lost their lives in this largely unknown piece of history. To this day it represents the single largest loss of US troops at sea.
In the days of his children growing up in Brooklyn, John coached Little League baseball for the St. Francis Xavier School. He was also the "honorary Mayor" of the CYO Surf Club of Coney Island. He was an avid Mets fan, and an even bigger and loyal fan of Notre Dame football. At home he was a loving husband, father and grandfather to the family he adored. Most recently was the addition of his first great-grandchild, Tyler. He enjoyed crossword and Jumbo puzzles, and had a knack for artistry, being extremely talented in pencil drawings.
Beloved father of Dr. Patricia Parton, John P. Galvin and Kevin Galvin, and father-in-law of Dr. Lance Parton, Cathy Galvin and Terry Doran. Cherished grandfather to Kristen Parton, Elizabeth Galvin, Lisa (Ryan) Scheller, Melissa Galvin and Brian (Rebecca) Parton; and great-grandfather to Tyler. John is predeceased by his beloved wife, Nora; and his brothers and sister - Andrew, Thomas, Joseph, Margaret and James.
Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Sunday, February 21st, from 2-4:30 and 7-9:30 p.m. On Sunday evening at 8:00 p.m., a Wake Service will be offered by Deacon Phil Mills. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 22nd at 10:45 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption R.C. Church in Copiague. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale.
