Blessed with an uncanny ability to make you laugh, Karen had a beautiful way of making those around her feel cared for and remembered. She is preceded in death by her loving mother and father, Dolores and Frederick Kossegi; was a devoted and loving sister to Kristine (Kurt), Frederick (Dawn), Michael (Ann Marie), Kevin, and Keith (Barb); and a beloved Aunt, or “Tanta,” to Jeffrey, Stefanie, Christopher, Kelly and Nicholas. She held a special place in their hearts, and her warmth, generosity, and thoughtful nature made her someone they could always count on. Karen periodically checked in and conversed with her siblings, treating each one as if they were her best friend. She never forgot an anniversary or birthday; without fail every year a card arrived a few days early, followed by her own cheerful phone call singing “Happy Birthday” the way Mom and Dad once did.
Karen worked in various vocations in the medical field, where her caring and compassionate nature was a natural reflection of who she was. Helping others was simply part of her character. She never hesitated to lend a hand, share her time or offer encouragement when it was needed as demonstrated by her presence, devotion, and care for Mom and Dad when they were ill. Outside of work, Karen loved spending time with family, friends, and her pets. She initiated family get-togethers for special occasions and went on numerous cruises and vacations with them and she always enjoyed the special time she spent with friends attending various luncheons, reunions, and other functions. These relationships meant the world to her, and, over the years, Karen collected many meaningful pieces from these family members and friends, which she proudly displayed in her home. For all of these items, she could tell you who gave it to her, when she received it, and what occasion it was for.
Karen found happiness in the simple beauty of nature. She loved her garden and spent much time planting and pruning, creating a haven for the birds that visited her yard. She decorated her yard with many ornaments, chimes, bird baths, and welcoming little homes for the birds she loved and really enjoyed watching them earning her the affectionate nickname “Bird Lady.” Her garden and birdhouses were a reflection of her gentle spirit and her appreciation for the world around her.
Karen was also very creative. She had a fantastic talent and her hands were always busy knitting, doing needlepoint, sewing, scrap booking, etc. She was always creating something unique and had a great eye for home decor, which shows when you walk in her home. Karen was a lifelong Mets fan (Gary Carter was her favorite) and she loved Bon Jovi. Simple pleasures made her happy. She loved pizza, cheeseburgers, and mac & cheese, but, most of all, she enjoyed her sweets like brownies, M&M’s, and Lindt chocolates.
Karen will be remembered for her loving heart, her thoughtfulness, her creativity, and the quiet ways she brought joy to those around her. She will be deeply missed, and her memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A Memorial Service will be held at D'Andrea Bros.Funeral Home, 99 Oak Street, Copiague, NY 11726, US, on October 14, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
