Anne Lucas, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2025, in Coppell, Texas, at the age of 90. Born on December 16, 1934, in Live Oak County, Texas, Anne was the cherished daughter of Thomas Armstrong Lewis and Cara Lou Robinson Lewis. She grew up in Beeville and pursued her education at Texas A&I (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville) before earning a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from The University of Texas at Austin.
Anne proudly served her country as a registered dietitian in the U.S. Army. Her career took her to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and later to Berlin during the early days of the Cold War. With her signature red Chevy convertible, she would drive to Checkpoint Charlie to wave at East German guards—a bold and lighthearted gesture that reflected her spirited personality.
After returning from Berlin, Anne married Lt. Col. John R. “Duke” Lucas in June 1963. Together, they built a life filled with love and adventure, starting on a farm in Meade County, Kentucky near Fort Knox. Anne embraced parenting Duke’s three teenage children—Bob, Jim, and Nora—before welcoming their son Ross into the family. After several lively years on the farm (including some close calls), the family moved to Elizabethtown, Kentucky and later retired to Victoria, Texas.
Anne returned to college at The University of Houston-Victoria to earn her accounting degree and became a Certified Public Accountant—a feat she accomplished simply to prove she could. She practiced briefly before retiring in the late 1980s.
Anne and Duke enjoyed their retirement playing golf, tending to the ranch, and traveling the world—finding commercial travel far preferable to military transport. After Duke’s passing in 1996, Anne became an active member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Victoria. She served as church treasurer for several years.
In her later years, Anne moved to the Dallas area following the birth of her granddaughter, Annie. She took on cherished roles as seamstress for Halloween costumes, director of “Grammy Camp,” golf coach, and piano lesson chauffeur—roles she considered among her proudest accomplishments.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband Duke Lucas and her brother Marion M. “Mack” Lewis. She is survived by her children: Bob Lucas (Barbara) of Newport News, Virginia; Jim Lucas (Barbara “Bee”) of Longmont, Colorado; Nora Miller (late husband Doug) of Raleigh, North Carolina; Ross Lucas (Maggie) of Coppell, Texas; five grandchildren: LilliAnn Lucas, Jay Lucas, Meredith Miller, Emily Miller, Annie Lucas; three great-grandchildren: Ronan Johnston, Savannah Johnston, Elizabeth Lucas; as well as her nephew Tom Lewis and niece Roxanne Lewis Miller.
In lieu of flowers, Anne’s family requests that donations be made in her memory to Glenwood Cemetery Association (P.O. Box 1212, Beeville, Texas 78102) where Anne’s parents are buried.
