Charles was born December 10th, 1946 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Dr. Charles Keith and Jeanne McCallum Emery, and had one sister, Marynell Emery Ford. He was a graduate of WB Ray High School, attended SMU in Dallas on a four year golf scholarship. He graduated from SMU in 1969.
He was a very accomplished golfer, and became a Class A Professional and PGA member in 1974. He and his wife, Mary Margaret, owned the golf shop at Lost Valley in Bandera, and later the golf shop at Woodcreek in Wimberley.
Charles also played in the Nike Mini tour for three years. He started working in sales of golf carts, and he ended up with Club Car Inc., where he won Salesman of the Year several times. He remained in the industry selling golf carts for 32 years.
Throughout the years, Charles scored six hole-in-ones.
Besides golf, Charles loved so many sports. His ability to remember statistics from football (high school, college, and professional), baseball, and Bowl games was remarkable. He could remember every player and their stories.
We called him Rand McNally. He knew all the roads and highways in Texas, Alabama, and Georgia, and all the roads leading west, the territory he worked for Club Car for 16 years.
Charles was a wonderful storyteller, comedian, and friend. He lit up a room when he came in and never met a stranger. He was a very good listener and liked to engage people in conversation. He would always ask where you were from, then he’d tell a story about that town’s high school football team or coach! He had an exceptional memory for stories.
Besides all of his life’s accomplishments, he was most proud to be called “Poppy.” His grandchildren were his reason for existence.
Charles is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Margaret (Red Fox) Emery; son Charles K Emery III and wife Nicole; daughter Gina Marie Emery Florence and husband Clint; grandchildren Emery Florence and Juliana Florence, Caden and Linley Grace Emery and Grey Emery; sister Marynell Emery Ford and husband William Ford; cousins Art Emery, Annette Moore, Tom Emery, Sally Emery, Jim Emery, and Eugene Emery.
Services will be held by longtime friend, classmate, and teammate John Redfearn, under the direction of Rolling Oaks Funeral Home.
Songstress: beloved friend, Lea Ann Leslie.
