Danny Roy Stallings, age 79, passed away peacefully Friday, April 14th in Lewisville, Tx. surrounded by family. Born January 8th, 1944 in Tyler, Tx. to Gertie and Raymond Roy Stallings, Dan grew up in Van, Tx and graduated from Van High School before setting off to UT Austin to study chemistry. He landed at Texas Instruments in Dallas where he thoroughly enjoyed his work there for ten years. A natural entrepreneur, he started a popcorn business which became his infamous claim to fame. "Dan Dan the Popcorn Man" as he was affectionately known, sold fresh, hot popcorn and loved listening to life stories from his regular customers as he worked behind a large antique popcorn machine located at One Main Place downtown Dallas. He later worked in sales for Liberto Specialty Co., Culligan Water, and ended his career working at the IRS in Dallas.
Dan is remembered by all for his exceptionally kind, gentle heart and the way all walks of people felt happy and comfortable around him. He was also known for his dry wit and sharp intellect. Dan loved math, chemistry, physics, studying biblical Greek and specialized in teaching others in a simple way in which all could understand. His hobbies throughout his lifetime included fishing, playing guitar, photography, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, listening to music especially rock and roll (anything Elvis!) attending the Dallas Symphony Orchestra concerts and the Texas State Fair every year. He loved running and completed twelve marathons, his favorites being the Dallas White Rock and the New York City Marathon. Most of all, Danny loved spending time with his family, children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Kay Stallings and their children; daughter Jordan Danielle Roitsch and her husband Charles Roitsch of Bellaire, Tx., son William Hamilton Stallings and his wife Amy Stallings of Lewisville, Tx, daughter June Ellen Wisner with first wife Linde Stallings, and her husband Todd Wisner of Navasota, Tx.; five grandchildren Sydney Taylor Wisner, Sarah Nell Wisner, Samson Luke Roitsch, Evelyn Ruth Roitsch, James William Roitsch and as well as his sister Marilyn Chrisman of Irving, Tx., brother-in-law Randy Holm of Sedona, Az., and his loving niece and nephew.
The family extends a sincere thank you to the wonderful staff and caregivers at Cedarcrest Senior Living of Lewisville, the entire team at Faith Presbyterian Hospice, and the good folks from UT Southwestern Medical Center Dallas for all their dedication to Danny’s care and wellbeing. Danny wanted to send a special shout-out to his two favorite doctors who guided his journey - Dr. Michael Chiu and Dr. Padraig O'Suilleabhain. Dan Dan the Popcorn Man is surely running in heaven, listening to Elvis, and enjoying popcorn.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be at Cox Chapel - Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Ln., Dallas, Tx. on Mon. May 1st at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to consider donations to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or to UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas.
