Ella Elizabeth Thomas

April 19, 1993January 23, 2018

Beautiful, brilliant, and all too briefly with us, Ella Elizabeth Horst Thomas died on January 23, 2018 at the age of 24. Throughout her short life Ella was known for her loving heart and generous spirit, as well as her quick wit and feisty personality. She had a passion for helping others, especially children, and a soft spot for dogs, including her beloved Mickey. All those fortunate enough to have known and loved her will miss her tremendously.

Despite entering this world nine weeks early and weighing only three and one-half pounds, Ella grew into a tall statuesque beauty with a genuine and radiant smile. By the age of seven she had become a world-class traveler, riding elephants in the Mekong River and attending school in New South Wales. She returned to the States at age nine with a pronounced and charming Aussie accent that never completely faded away.

In 2005 the Thomas family moved to Coppell, Texas where Ella attended middle and high school, graduating in 2011. She excelled at basketball for the Coppell Cowgirls and, like her mother and her grandfather, enjoyed playing the trombone. A life-changing mission trip to Chicago during high school reinforced her strong desire to work with the disadvantaged. Her honesty and forthrightness further armed her for fighting local injustice, including unwarranted traffic stops by the police, despite her youth.

Ella attended the University of Arkansas and returned to Coppell in 2017. With her she brought joy, laughter, and a giant capacity for love. Ella is survived by her parents, Chris and Martha, and her brother, Solomon, as well as extended family and many friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Gil Taylor Depression Awareness Alliance or The Family Place.

Dear Chris, Martha and Solomon,

We are so sorry for the loss of your beautiful and bright sister and daughter, Ella. I do remember her positive energy and contagious smile when you guys attended First United Methodist Church, Stamford. Solomon, I read your moving story on ESPN about Ella and it touched my heart. Actually, our son, Timothy (age 30) found it and told us about it. Your commitment to educate others about suicide is a way to honor Ella. Keep up the good work because you will save lives. I wish I could do more than make a donation but I believe that through one person’s love expressed to a family who is mourning the loss of a beloved daughter and sister, God has a way of strengthening you, healing your pain and using you for God. With Love, Pastor Doug and Eileen McArthur. We retired July 1, 2018 and living in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Hey Ella,
We never met but I just saw your story on ESPN. It broke my heart. I can relate to your sadness but have leaned on God to keep it in check. I looked you up and see we have the sane birthday. I hope to see you one day but not yet. You are an angel.

Chris, Martha, & Solomon -

I send you my deepest condolences for the tragic loss of Ella. There are few things more difficult than the loss of a child, in this case a child who grew to a precious young adult.

It's seems like yesterday when Ella and Solomon were born to be two kids so lucky to call each of you Mom and Dad. I know the depth of love they were surrounded by and the values instilled in them to touch and improve the human kind in the world.

May Ella's spirit carry on and may the gifts she gave to your family, friends, and society be long remembered far beyond her years on earth.

May all of you find peace, strength, and love at this most difficult time.
