Gabriel was born in Waco, TX. He received his BBA in 1983 from Baylor University and was a big Baylor Fan up until the end; attending football games. He received his Juris Doctor from South Texas Law School in Houston.
Gabriel was unique because of his love for learning…about the world, about the people he came into contact with. Gabriel worked hard to be literate in a wide area of knowledge. For example, he had deep knowledge about universities, college football, French cartoonists, Costa Rican coffee, classic Humphrey Bogart movies, Syrian tapestries, Baylor University history, 1940's radio programs, the crepe-making legacy of the Normandy area of France, and how to smoke a cigar correctly. You did not want to be on the opposing team against Gabe in a game of Trivial Pursuit!
Gabriel was in a class all by himself in the art of storytelling. To see his face light up with a wide variety of expressions as he told a story was a joy! And what he was telling, although it could easily be made up for the purpose of evoking laughter, was usually extremely well researched.
Gabe was an avid traveler who received the Medaille Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Knight of the Order of Academic Palms), an Order of Chivalry of France for academics and cultural and educational figures. He was honored for his contributions to French national education and culture at the Alliance Française in Dallas (AFD), a non-profit, cultural and learning center dedicated to the study of the French language, cultural exchange and friendship between Americans and all French-speaking people.
Gabe decided early in life to put his boundless energy into experiencing life with all that it has to offer. He did not hesitate when he liked something. He jumped in immediately. He got engaged to Cira, his wife of 28 years, within days of meeting her!
May we all keep his spirit alive and live life and give to everyone who we come into contact with during our relatively short time on this earth. Let us leave our mark on those who we love while we are here.
Gabe was preceded in death by his father Charlie Lugo Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Cira Lugo; children, Catherine Lugo and Christopher Lugo; mother, Janie Lugo; and his brother Charlie Lugo III and his wife Lydia.
