George Meledathu Varughese

George M. Varughese, affectionately known as Raju and Rajuchayan, passed away on September 14, 2026. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and faithful servant of the church, he will be remembered for his gentle presence, love of learning, and devotion to family and faith.

Born on May 13, 1941, George was the son of the late M. T. Varughese Meledathu and the late P. Mariamma, and brother of the late Annamma Varughese, the late Thomas Varughese, the late Mary Varughese, Dr. Pothen Varughese, the late Achamma Varughese, Elizabeth Varughese, and Jacob Varughese.

George pursued undergraduate studies at CMS College, Kottayam. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Union Christian College, Aluva, his Bachelor of Education from K. E. College, Mannanam, Kottayam, and his Master of Arts in Economics from St. John’s College, Agra. He began his teaching career at St. John’s High School in Eraviperoor, Kerala.

On January 23, 1973, George married Maria George, affectionately known as Leelamamma, of the Kaithayil Mundakakulathu family. That same year, he immigrated to the US and settled in Dallas. He later worked as a senior manager at GE Aviation until his early retirement in 1999. George and Leelamamma shared 53 years of marriage, building a life together centered on faith and family.

They were blessed with two children: their daughter, Jennifer Somaney, and her husband, Anil Somaney; and their son, Charles George, and his wife, Rosario Solis.

George was a loving grandfather to Arun Somaney, Caleb George, Rio George, and Charlie-Rose George.

A beloved member of the CSI Congregation of Dallas, George served the church with humility and dedication. As Treasurer of the Council of CSI Congregations in North America, he carried out his responsibilities with integrity and a sincere commitment to God’s work. He was also a founding member of the Kerala Ecumenical Christian Fellowship of Dallas in 1979 and served as its general secretary. His warm spirit and steadfast support of the church community will be remembered with deep gratitude.

George was known for his beautiful singing voice and eloquence as a speaker. A voracious reader and movie buff, he enjoyed Hindi, English, and Malayalam films and songs. He also enjoyed watching sports.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Leelamamma; his children and their spouses; his four grandchildren; his siblings, Dr. Pothen Varughese, Elizabeth Varughese and Jacob Varughese; and his extended family. His memory will remain with the relatives, friends, and church family who shared his life. His family takes comfort in the Christian promise of resurrection and eternal life.
