Mom was born on October 2, 1943, in Port Arthur, TX to Dora and Paul “Ram” Fontenot and lived there until her early 20’s. She went to Bishop Byrne High School and was a proud member of the Drum & Bugle Corps - The Colleens. Mom moved us to Irving in the late 60’s and all 3 of us really grew up there together.
If you knew Mom, you knew the 3 C’s of Jerry: 1) Cajun, 2) Catholic and 3) CRAZY. She was very proud of her heritage, treasured her faith and had a wicked sense of humor, a wonderful laugh and could find joy in just about everything. As a music lover, she ADORED Elvis and was blessed to have seen him multiple times live in concert. Roy Rogers was her first love. Among mom’s favorite things were cooking, dancing, movies, Looney Tunes, amusement park rides, the beach and above all, her faith.
Mom was never afraid to speak her mind and stand up for those who could not stand up for themselves. She had soft spots for the elderly, children, and animals and devoted time and money to each, working to ensure their care, safety and humane treatment.
She worked very hard all her life and taught us the value of a strong work ethic with the many positions she held in the pharmaceutical industry, where she finally retired in 2000, after over three decades of devoted service. After retirement, Mom worked at St. Ann’s briefly, then threw herself into her faith with countless Bible studies, CHiRP groups, RCIA sponsorships and lots of social gatherings with her sisters in Christ. These friendships and fellowships are where she loved spending most of her time.
While Mom was proud of us girls, she was especially proud of completing the Catholic Biblical School 2-year program at University of Dallas in Basic Biblical Studies. This program gave Mom such a huge sense of pride and accomplishment. We were so proud of her!
Mom was preceded in death by her father, Paul Fontenot, her mother Dora Mae Champagne and stepfather JB Champagne.
She is survived by her daughters Mauri Elizondo of Carrollton, TX and Wendy Meyer (Doug) of Plano, TX, grandson Nicholas Snyder of Austin, TX, sister Rita Romero of Vidor, TX, nephew Brad Broussard (Lan) of Pflugerville, TX and countless friends.
Please join us for a Rosary/Visitation on Thursday, February 20, 6:00 PM at Rolling Oaks Funeral Home in Coppell, and mass, celebrating her life on Friday, February 21, 10 AM at St. Ann Catholic Church in Coppell. In lieu of flowers, Mom would have loved for you to donate to Catholic Charities or the SPCA in her name. There wasn’t a critter Mom didn’t love.
We are eternally grateful to all the many friends who loved on her and helped care for her throughout her last years.
- Jerry’s girls, Mauri & Wendy
