“Ti amo più ogni altra cosa al mondo”
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Dr. John Ferraris, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend who died peacefully at age 78 on May 5, 2025 surrounded by loved ones.
Born to Italian parents, John brought the heart of Italy wherever he went. He met the love of his life, Lin, AKA “my girl”, and together they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family.
John loved Christmas and our annual dinner was the highlight of each year. It began with a long list of ingredients and an early morning trek to Jimmie's Italian Grocery Store. After the cart was filled and we returned home, the magic began as the house filled with the aroma of slow-cooked sauce. Whether he was arranging large platters of antipasto, making spaghetti or ravioli, (sometimes from scratch) or preparing the sauce, John lived with passion and joy of a true Italian. In earlier years, with his daughter propped up on a chair beside him, he taught her how to roll the meatballs while instilling in her how to always carry a little piece of Italy in her heart.
While John wore many hats throughout his life, being a husband and father and embracing his Italian heritage were the things he cherished most.
A lifelong educator, mentor, and scholar, Dr. Ferraris dedicated more than four decades to reaching and inspiring students at The University of Texas at Dallas, where he was a beloved member of the faculty. Known for his passion for Chemistry, sharp intellect, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence, Dr. Ferraris left an indelible mark on generations of students and colleagues.
Beyond the classroom he was an accomplished researcher, a published author and a tireless advocate for higher education. Yet, it was his warmth, humor, and genuine care for others that truly defined his legacy.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Lin, daughter Alexandra (his favorite French Hornist), his son Ethan, Maggie…his sidekick and foot warmer, his sisters Lucretia (Vincent) Pannozzo, Phyllis Ferraris (Steven Espley), nephew Vincent John (Natalie) Pannozzo, brother-in-law Tom (Debbie) Chapman, nephews, Andrew (Emily) Chapman and Brian (Elizabeth) Chapman.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor his memory with every clink of a wine glass, every meal shared, and every story told beneath the stars.
