I was a student at SMU and my brother, Bob West , was student manager of SMU’s football team during Hayden’s years. But our Aunt, Aline “Maggie” Hamlett , was Coach Fry’s Secretary and had been the Athletic Secretary for 39 years. She and Coach Fry had a terrific working relationship as well as a friendship. Maggie passed in 2004, but some of her prized possessions were letters from Coach Fry telling her she was the Best Secretary he ever had. She framed those letters and they hung for all to see. In the nineties, I wanted an autographed ball for a nephew and when I contacted Coach Fry, he said absolutely. I sent him a ball and he sent it back with a special message to Maggie. When he left SMU, so did she. I shall always remember how nice he was when I would come visit my aunt in her office. And she will be watching for him in Heaven should he need a good Secretary again. Blessings to the Fry family. He was a gentleman always!

As a SMU student during the Hayden Fry era, I admired and respected that Coach Fry not only built great football teams but also men of character. Equally important, the young men under his leadership had one of the highest graduation rates in Division I football. The positive impact he had on so many lives will live on.

My deepest sympathy to the Fry family,
Mike Goodwin , SMU 67
