John Carlos Trejo of Coppell, Texas passed away unexpectedly March 7, 2021 at the tender age of 71. John, lovingly known as “Popo” to his seven grandchildren. This was the most precious and cherished gift his amazing wife Diana and he ever received in their life. Diana and John were dog sitting for their daughter as her family and sister’s family enjoyed a nice getaway to the lake to enjoy the beautiful late-winter Texas weather for a couple of days. That Sunday, John had over-exerted himself after chasing a reckless little puppy around the front yard and felt exhausted. He came back inside and found comfort in his favorite spot on the sofa so he could catch his breath. He told Diana that “this little puppy wore me out.” John was in relatively good health but his diabetes and a family history of heart trouble from his parents must have began to take a toll on him. While Diana was warming up breakfast for John, she called out to him to check on him. He didn’t respond. She immediately ran over to him as she noticed his head was rested against the sofa looking up to the ceiling and his mouth was open. She quickly discovered that he had ceased breathing. She called the paramedics and immediately began CPR on John. The paramedics did their very best to stabilize him. The emergency doctors and nurses were amazing as they worked on John for over two hours looking for a glimmer of hope. All of his children rushed back and thankfully arrived at the hospital to be by his side. Diana, his two daughters, and his son were all holding his hand by his bedside before and during his passing from this world to be with his Lord and Savior in heaven.
John was born to Juan Carlos Trejo and Adelia (Rodriguez) Trejo in the sprouting city of San Antonio, Texas March 11, 1949. John grew up with his brother, Tito Amaya, and sister, Elena Sanchez. John grew up in San Antonio and attended Saint Henry’s all the way though junior high. While John was in second grade, he made a lifelong friend named Tommy Trevino. He and Tommy were as close as brothers and thick as thieves. They were compadres all the way through attending Holy Cross High School. John was a star lineman on both sides of the ball all throughout high school weighing a hefty 161 pounds. He recalled hitting unfortunate adversaries like a steam engine as they dropped to the field.
John found the love of his life at the tender age of fourteen. Diana and John immediately found that they were soulmates and both fell head over heals in love with one another. They were inseparable starting in high school. They would go on dates together with kid sister Lori (Garza) Floyd being the honorary chaperone. This bond together would last all the way through their marriage. They really did everything together. John and Diana started out with humble means in a small home at 515 Taft Street in their hometown of San Antonio. John, a lifelong salesman, started working for ElectroTex selling television cable and wiring to local homes. While still in San Antonio, John and Diana were blessed with their first child, Tracie (Trejo) Sandlin. A job transfer brought the young family to the city of Irving in the growing metropolis of Dallas Fort-Worth. After about four years in Irving, they received their next blessing, Mandy (Trejo) Wittenberg. Two years later, after John’s many prayers, the family was blessed with their first son, John Trejo. The Trejo’s spent fifty years in Irving. John was completely immersed in his children’s sports. John coached many sports teams for his children. This was his passion. He carried this passion into his seven grandbabies’ sports as well. John was known as the loudest person at the games. He continued this trend into his grandchildren’s sports. He was often heard yelling two words at soccer games…”SHOOT!” and “HARD!”. It didn’t matter where the ball was on the field.
John was obsessed with sweets, lotto scratch offs, the dream of winning the big jackpot. Did we mention he loved sweets? He loved donuts, peeps candy, candy corns, pan dulce and of course ice cream. He loved to sweep Diana off her feet at the dance halls, night clubs and honkey tonks.
John would walk into a house and brought a comforting “happy-go-lucky” attitude and loved talking to everyone! We grieve because he left too soon. We feel comfort because he will not suffer in old age because he is in heaven with his God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Diana Lynn Trejo of Coppell, Texas; sister, Elena Sanchez, daughters, Tracie Lee Sandlin and husband, Anthony of Irving, Texas, Mandy Lee Wittenberg and husband John of Coppell, Texas, son John Anthony Trejo and wife, Summer of Coppell, Texas; grandchildren, Victoria Sandlin, Alexandria Sandlin, Sydnee Wittenberg, Cooper Trejo, Jacob Sandlin, Kayden Wittenberg and Sloan Trejo; and a host of other loving family members and friends.
A family and friends visitation will begin at 6PM, with the heavenly birthday celebration to follow at 7PM on Friday, March 12, 2021 at Rolling Oaks Funeral Home, 400 Freeport, Coppell, Texas 75019.
