It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Kaye Ferguson McCullough or “Gran” as she was affectionately referred to by her family. She passed away on Monday, September 19, 2022 after a brief illness.
Kaye was born on February 18, 1939 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of Faye Whitfield Ferguson and Marjorie Walbert Ferguson. Kaye grew up in the community of Bush Hills in Oklahoma City and recalled very fond childhood memories of being surrounded by countryside, enjoying the family swimming pool, tennis court and just running “wild and free”. Mom would often recall what a special childhood she had during this time and would frequently recount stories of the memories she made with her immediate family as well as numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Mainly, Kaye remembered her father, Faye, who during this time, had the most impact on her young life. Faye was a prominent athlete, coach, and Oklahoma City developer, who unfortunately passed away when Kaye was only 12. We recall her always mentioning her father in conversations that we would have over the years, and what a wonderful man he was. When she spoke of him, she beamed with pride. How wonderful it is that they have been reunited!
An excellent student, Kaye graduated from Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City. She attended Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada, the University of Oklahoma, and later graduated from the University of Texas with Dean’s Honors, receiving a B.A. in Fine Arts, with an emphasis in Theatre Arts. There she studied under the renown Ben Iden Payne, and frequently mentioned him as a profound influence in her life. She was also a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and the Curtain Club dramatic organization.
At the University of Texas, she met and married John Burleson McCullough. She and John were later married at the Crown Heights Methodist Church in Oklahoma City on September 10, 1960. She would frequently recall this special time in her life, living in Austin with her husband and embarking on newly married life.
Kaye and John would later welcome their children into the world. John Jr. was born January 24, 1964 and their daughter Jennifer, on July 10, 1968.
Kaye worked in several fields when her children were young, mainly the medical field, managing offices of prominent Dallas doctors.
Always interested in growing intellectually, she later received her Master’s of Liberal Arts degree from SMU. She had an insatiable desire for knowledge and growing intellectually as a person.
In keeping with her love of the arts, she and John were members of the Dallas Museum of Art and the Dallas Symphony and were always attending exhibits and performances with friends and family.
Kaye was also a lover of antiques. She loved to attend estate sales with her friends in efforts to find that elusive piece of art. In fact, Kaye opened her own antique booth, JK Keepsakes, and always found great enjoyment in adding new collections and finding the latest “treasure”.
As she frequently stated, Kaye’s greatest enjoyment later in life was the birth of her grandchildren. She was always very involved with their activities and would frequently mention little things they said and did that “just cracked me up”.
Kaye is preceded in death by her husband John, and is survived by children, John McCullough, Jr. and his wife, Vivian, of Arlington, Texas, daughter Jennifer Alcock and her husband, Todd, of Flower Mound, Texas, granddaughter Kathryn Grace McCullough, and grandsons Brett Alcock, John McCullough III, and Garrett Alcock, brothers Jon Ferguson, of Chico, California and Tod Ferguson, of Oklahoma City. She is also survived by cousins, Kathy Walker, and her husband, Russ, Thomas Walbert, Jimmy Ferguson, Sally Morrison Stringer, Bob Morrison, Dan Morrison, Patricia Ferguson Gardner and Susie Ferguson Johnson all of Oklahoma City, Ok, and Susan Morrison Dyke of Boston, Ma.
