Lee Ray was born on September 21, 1956, in Fort Worth to Frank and Stella Massey. He was later joined by two brothers, David and Steven. They were raised in Bowie, Texas, where they enjoyed the outdoors and all kinds of sports and had an idyllic Texas childhood. While at Bowie High School, he participated in basketball, football, and golf for all four years. He was named to all-district teams for both football and basketball in 1974 and 1975. As a member of the 1974 state champion basketball team, he scored 7 points in 21 seconds in the state championship game and was named all-state tournament. Lee Ray started as both quarterback and defensive back on the 1974 state semifinalist football team and was named 1st Team All-State defensive back. Lee Ray was also a member of the National Honor Society and was elected to serve as President of the Student Council.
After high school, Lee Ray took his basketball coach’s advice and decided to play basketball at Austin College, where he played for two years before deciding to concentrate on academics. He was an active member of the Phi Sigma Alpha fraternity and was elected Austin College Vice President of Men for his senior year. He graduated in 1979 with a degree in business administration. In 1979, he married his first wife, Kathleen Willis; they later divorced. Lee Ray then married Pamela Loen in 1990, and they welcomed their son Blaine in 1991. They raised Blaine and Pam’s son, Erik Loen, in Boise, Idaho, and were married for nearly 20 years. Lee Ray joined Hewlett Packard in 1980, climbing the corporate ladder, beginning as a sales representative for the southern region in 1983 and ultimately becoming senior vice president of IPG America. He retired in 2008 and met his wife Kristine shortly thereafter. Lee Ray moved to Sun Valley, Idaho, where he and Kristine enjoyed the beautiful outdoors and the great friends they made. They decided to return to Dallas to help his parents as they got older and built a happy, relaxed life together in Texas. Lee Ray was delighted to be able to reestablish his friendships with so many people from Bowie and Austin College.
Lee Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Massey and Stella Massey Helf, cousins Renee Bruce, Terry Massey and Tamara Lewis, sister-in-law Jackie Massey, and many loved aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife Kristine, his son Blaine (Hilary), and granddaughter Rose. He also leaves his brothers David Massey, Steven (Dawn) Massey, and stepchildren Kathryn (Dillion) Castillo, Troy Kemp, and Erik (Bridget) Loen, and his nieces and nephews, Landon (Delaney), Carson (Megan), Nathan, Broden, Stella, Summer, and Stetson. He has another grandchild due in December, whom he looked forward to meeting. Lee Ray will always be remembered as a kind-hearted, loving grandpa, father, and uncle who was a great storyteller. He made everyone feel important and loved and was the ‘glue’ of Massey family functions. His favorite pastimes included spending time with family, playing golf, and blackjack and attending the Wise County Old Settlers Reunion. His favorite places were Pebble Beach, CA, and the South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho.
A celebration of life will take place at Rolling Oaks Funeral Home in Coppell, TX on September 21, 2024, at 2:00 pm.
