Dennis Courtney, 66, of Copperas Cove passed away on March 11, 2025. Dennis was born January 30, 1959, in Gatesville, TX to James (JO) Courtney and Nelda Manning Courtney. He was reared in Copperas Cove, attending Copperas Cove High School.
Dennis dedicated more than 35 years to the City of Copperas Cove, all of which were in the Sewer Department. He retired in January 2021. While working at the City of Copperas Cove he obtained many certificates, was one of two welders, and was a heavy equipment operator. He was always eager to lend a helping hand where needed, in any department.
Dennis contributed to his community and Central Texas with his beautiful welding skills that can still be noticed in the area as he constructed many metal buildings, carwashes, stairs, handrails, gates and anything else requested. There was nothing Dennis couldn’t work on or fix… except for electricity.
Dennis was a very kind hearted person with a lot of wit about him.
In Dennis’s early years he joined the bull riding circuit, winning numerous belt buckles.
He found a love for John Deere tractors, even restoring a 1941 Model A. He would travel all over Central Texas to show his tractor at antique tractor shows. In 2014 he won ”Best Restored Tractor” at the Hamilton Antique Tractor Show.
In 1989 Dennis met Kristi McGee Courtney. They built a wonderful friendship that turned into a lifetime relationship, marrying in 1993.
Dennis was active with City sports, playing co-ed softball and then later volunteering to coach girls’ softball for City of Copperas Cove Parks and Rec.
Dennis loved family time, hunting, fishing, baseball, music, camping and tractors. He shared his love of music with his daughters and his love of bull riding and sports with his grandsons. He was always eager to go hunting or fishing with whoever wanted to go. He looked forward to family reunions to talk about days gone by and relish the memories he had kept close.
Preceding Dennis in death are his parents JO and Nelda Courtney.
Remaining to cherish his memory is his wife of 31 years, Kristi; daughter Candace and husband Joshua Brown of Gatesville, TX, daughter Kinzi and wife Brittany Kennedy of Huntsville, TX; two grandsons Case and Colt Brown; his sister Linda and husband Fred Crandall, of Gatesville, TX and his brother Sammie and wife Cinda Courtney of Copperas Cove; father in law John McGee of Copperas Cove and many nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
A Visitation will be held Friday March 14th from 6pm to 8pm at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. A Funeral Service will be on Saturday March 15th beginning at 10am at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home followed by a Committal Service at Smith Cemetery in Oakalla, Texas.
