OBITUARY

Dorothy M Gillespie

July 6, 1923November 1, 2019

Dorothy Marie Gillespie Loving mother and grandmother With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Dorothy Gillespie, our devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched. Dorothy passed away in her sleep on November 1, 2019 at Spring Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had resided for the past 9 years. Dorothy was 96 years old at the time of her death. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Gillespie, sons Harry Thornton Gillespie and Albert Stilling. She is survived by daughters Nancy Hammonds of Kempner, Texas, Rosezella Sparberg of Glen Burnie Maryland, Cathy Gillespie of Baltimore, Maryland, and son James Welch of Salisbury, Maryland. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 14 great great grandchildren. Dorothy worked in various Baltimore Catholic Schools as a custodian and cook. She worked until age 85 when medical conditions forced her to retire. She resided in Fredricks Villa Nursing home until September, 2010 when she was transferred to Spring Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lampasas, Texas. Dorothy resided at Spring Oaks until her passing. Dorothy was born July 6, 1923 in Odenton, Maryland to Carrie Vermillion and John Conaway. She was the middle child in the family of three. She resided in Baltimore, Maryland until 2010. Dorothy was a wonderful cook and loved to cook for her family and even her friends and neighbors. She loved to crochet in the evenings and bowl. Most of all she loved her family and instilled strong values. She was a strong-willed person who was strict but fair with her children. It was a school of hard knocks and we were told many times how she had to walk to school in the snow so “suck it up”. With that said, she was genuine to a fault, a pussy cat at heart, and yet sugar coated nothing. Dorothy did not hold back her opinion and had a knack of telling it as it is. Dorothy was not one to want extravagant things so when she arrived in heaven, she probably was not looking for the streets of gold but a bridge over a river full of crabs. Dorothy was loved by all that came in contact with her and her cheerfulness in spite of her conditions touched the hearts of everyone. Dorothy will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. She left behind many memories that will carry us forward.

I have sooo many favorite memories of Grandmom! And I will cherish them all. But one thing that sticks out about Grandmom is.......no matter how bad your day is going or how rough life is for you....just going to Grandmoms for a visit and some conversations along with some card playing. Grandmom would always tell me....”Deborah, everything thing will be alright”. I love you Grandmom to the moon and back!
