

Elmer was born on April 22, 1936 in Hoisington, Kansas to parents Arthur E. Steinert and Elsie Emma (Nicklaus) Steinert. Elmer spent his early years there before serving his country as a proud member of the U.S. Army. His service led him to Texas, where he built a life full of purpose, kindness, and dedication.
Elmer is preceded in death by his parents as well as his two brothers and two sisters. He is also reunited in peace with his late wife; Mary Steinert and ex-wife Patsy Hobday and his daughters; Edith Ann Key and Judy Dean Key.
He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory, his grandchildren; Amy Kirk of Troy, James Key Jr. of Temple, and Terry Key of Temple, as well as his four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Throughout his life, Elmer embraced hard work and a passion for helping others. He dedicated years as an electrician at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and later served the City of Killeen in the water and sewer department. When not working, he found joy in lending a hand as a ranch hand, embodying his love for the outdoors and his desire to uplift those around him. Elmer's passion for cooking was more than just preparing meals-- it was an act of love.
He found immense joy in sharing his dishes with others, making every meal an opportunity to bring people together. Hunting and exploring the great outdoors were also a deep part of his life, reflecting his appreciation for nature's beauty and adventure.
Above all, Elmer was a man of wisdom, generosity, and warmth. He believed in helping others improve their lives, sharing his knowledge and experiences freely. His legacy of kindness, hard work, and unwavering support will live on through the countless lives he touched.
He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of his family and friends.
Visitation will be at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove, Texas on June 3, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home, followed by a Graveside Service at 11:00 AM in the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery located in Killeen, Texas
