Spider-Man. Knowing who you’re reading about, chances are you smiled. Joe was our Spider-Man from actually saving lives as a firefighter to offering to help a friend or family member in need. This hero was an awkward and at times sarcastic individual that did not like the limelight. He protected his community, his friends, and his family without the need for thanks. After spending time with him, one couldn’t help be drawn to his compassion and humor. Am I still talking about Spider-Man or Joe? That’s the point.

But, of course, Joe was his own person.

He was a son to parents Maria and Felipe that loved him as much as he drove them crazy. He was a little brother to two siblings, Gabe and Natalie, that claimed he was the favorite in the family when they themselves knew he was their favorite too. And Though Joe spoke in slow, broken Spanish, era Mexicano because when he got drunk, Joe sang Vicente Fernandez songs. He was there for the boisterous quinceañeras, weddings, birthday parties, and gatherings where his family teased him for his reserved nature but loved him all the same.

Joe had another family. He was a brother among firefighters and paramedics. They came to learn that this quiet individual came with subtle quips and mischievous side-eyeing. As said by his shift, Joe got them “fat.” He cooked for them, and though he never said it, it was his way of showing his affection. As a firefighter, he came home exhausted and smelly, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. He knew he was going to play with firetrucks forever.

This was who my husband was. He was quiet and a riot. He was humble and sarcastic. He was caring and impish.

And he was loved.

I had the honor of working with this young man. He was always quite around me so I would always babble to him until I got him to open up. He was a wonderful individual and will be missed. RIP my fellow Spider-Man lover.

He was introduced to me as 'Negrete' but I know most of the firefighters by their last names. I didn't know him well but when I did meet/interact with him, he was very shy but always kind.

Please know that our family is keeping you and yours in our thoughts and prayers

I have seen practically every Marvel/DC/Super Hero with Joe since we both started working with each other. I will never forget how he would trick Maggie into coming out with us for the movies. My wife also will never let me live down that our first anniversary involved my best friend, and all of us going to see a super hero movie. He actually brought a card thanking her for not killing me yet.

Thank you for being such a kind soul to my best friend Maggie, the way you were able to be so down to earth yet so goofy was always something we admired in you.. I think that Easter where we all got together and had our grown up mini e egg hunt was the best! Super fun. Rest Easy Joe, you will be dearly missed.

To the family of Jose. I retired from Copperas Cove FD in 2011, but always visited the station when I would come back to Cove to visit family. I met this young man a couple of times. Very friendly and very polite. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. God bless you all.
