Juanita Workman, age 87, was received in Heaven on October 7th in Temple, TX. She was born in Louisville, KY to Roy and Minerva Haysley. She grew up in Louisville and she always liked to say “6 blocks away from Churchill Downs”. She was 1 of 7 children 5 of who have preceded her in death; James Haysley, Mary Young, Margaret Helms, Dorothy Harper, Walter Haysley and survived by George Haysley and multiple nieces and nephews.
Her enduring spirit shone bright until the end, actively engaged in her community, a testament to her unwavering strength. She had 47 years with her husband Tom who she married on October 31, 1961 and is now reunited with in heaven. Together they had 3 children: Thomas Workman Jr. of Temple, Susan Vazquez (Victor) of Eddy and Pamela Picott (John) of Kempner.
Family is very important to her, as a Sister, Mother and Nanny!! She was blessed with 18 Grandchildren, and 24 Great-Grandchildren and last year her first Great-Great-Grandchild; Santiago.
Juanita embodied hard work, generosity through all her different volunteer activities and clubs. She loved being a military wife to Tom and gave support to the wives in the NCO Wives Club during their different duty stations. She served as Den Mother in the Boy Scouts, and she also served as Cookie Mother for her daughters in the Girl Scouts.
She also worked throughout her adult life starting in Kentucky at Churchill Downs in Skye Terrace, managing the food service personal. She switched to the banking industry as a bank teller in Friedberg, Germany and also Copperas Cove, TX. She was a career Army wife during the 28 yrs. of active duty with Tom. With Tom by her side in March 1982, they started a new chapter in their life with another mission of military service to Veterans by joining VFW 8577 Auxiliary.
The list of offices and chairmanships are numerous over the years from 1982 to Present: Auxiliary President 15 times, District President 2 times, all the State Chairs and 4 chairmanships. She was State of TX President 94-95 and she was honored as a Kentucky Colonel on August 2, 1994. She was very proud serving our Veterans all over the State of TX! She was National Council Member 97-99, State Treasurer 7 years, VAVS – Department of Texas 4 years and was honored with Mentor of the year 2018.
She has said many times “I love serving our veterans anyway that I can.”
She also was Grand President of TX in the (MOCA) Military order of Cooties Auxiliary. They like to clown around in the VA Hospitals putting a smile on the Veteran’s faces!
She moved to Temple in 2011 and joined Temple Bible Church and became a part of the New Song Widow’s Bible study group. These ladies joined together and offered support through all the things that come with loss and with health issues and age. God had given her a group of ladies who have loved on her through the ups and downs of this journey of life. She loved sharing food and time with these ladies especially when they came to visit during her stays in the hospital and rehab during the last few years. She has always known and loved Jesus and these ladies helped her see Jesus in action.
Her beautiful, spirited, and sassy soul left an indelible mark on all of us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Temple Bible Church New Song Widows.
