Melba Goodwin Bennett

Melba Goodwin Bennett, age 93, went to be with the Lord on June 29th. She was born April 8, 1919 at home in Stampede Community in Coryell County on land that later became part of Ft. Hood. Melba was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Ethel Goodwin and 6 siblings. Richard “Dick” Bennett, her husband of 63 years, died in March 2012. She is survived by 2 sons, Bert and Bob and 2 daughters, Kathy Doyle and Karen Bennett, and 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Melba lived most of her life in Gatesville, Killeen, and Copperas Cove area. Her long career in civil service was spent primarily in Transportation Department at Ft. Hood. Melba was a member of the Church of Christ in Kempner. An avid bowler, she was elected to the Women Bowlers Hall of Fame. Melba led the effort to establish Hwy 190 at the entrance to Ft. Hood as a Blue Star Memorial Highway dedicated to fallen veterans. She was a leader and active member of the Browning Community Garden Club.

Viewing will be Saturday, July 7th from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. A graveside service will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the Copperas Cove Cemetery.
