Mike was born on October 22, 1964, in Munich, Germany, into a military family. As a young child, his family relocated to Texas, where he spent his life serving others, first through 34 years with the Copperas Cove Fire Department, where he retired as Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Marshal, and later through his work at Central Texas
College. But if you asked those who loved him what defined his life, they probably wouldn't mention his career.
They would tell you he was kind.
On August 17, 1985, Mike married the love of his life, Paula. Together they built a beautiful life over the next 41 years, raising two daughters and creating a family that was always his greatest source of pride. Their marriage was rooted in love, commitment, and the quiet strength that carried them through every season of life. Mike had a way of making people feel seen. He treated everyone with respect, offered grace freely, and never believed anyone was beneath his time or attention. He was humble, dependable, and the kind of man who quietly showed up whenever someone needed him. He never sought recognition for the things he did. Helping others simply came naturally.
Above all else, Mike was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend. His family was the center of his world, and some of their favorite memories were the simplest ones spent together. He taught those around him not through words, but through the example he set every day. His kindness, integrity, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Even as he faced cancer, Mike remained more concerned about the people caring for him than himself. He never lost his gratitude, his humility, or his compassion.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Paula Fleming; his daughters, Krystal Baker and husband Ryan Baker, and Brandi Slaughter and husband Ezra Slaughter; his cherished grandchildren, Kaylee Baker, Michael Baker, Charliann Slaughter, and Eli Slaughter; his sister, Corrina Johnston; his niece, Alexys Fleming; his two brother-in-laws, Johnny Morgan and Tommy Deering; his Sister-in-law, Debra Barlow, and many extended family members, lifelong friends, and brothers and sisters in the fire service.
Though his absence leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched. His family hopes those who knew Mike will honor his memory by living a little more like he did: with kindness, patience, humility, and a willingness to make others feel seen and valued.
A Celebration of Life honoring Michael will be held at 10:00 am on June 29, 2026 at Lea Ledger Auditorium, where family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation at https://www.ncf.net/donate .
