Minnie Simmons was born on July 22, 1946 in McCondy, Mississippi. She left this earthly realm to be united with the Lord on September 18, 2019. She is the only child of Azzie Mae Simmons and Robert Lee Mitchell.
She joined the United States Army in 1981 and served as an Aircraft Armament Missile System Repairman (Apache Helicopter Mechanic). She received the following awards and decorations : The Army Achievement Medal, The Army Commendation Medal, The National Defense Ribbon, The Good Conduct Medal 3rd award, The NCO Professional Development Ribbon 2nd award, The Army Service Ribbon, The Overseas Service Ribbon 2nd award, The Aircraft Crewman Badge, The Driver Mechanic Badge, and The Sharpshooter Badge.
She went to Basic Training in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. She went to AIT at Ft. Eustis, Va. Her first duty station was Ft. Hood, Tx. She served two tours in Germany. The first of which is where she met the love of her life David. After leaving Germany the first time, she was stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA, as an instructor. Then she went on her second tour to Germany. Her final duty station was in Ft. Hood, TX. She received an Honorable Discharge in April of 1992.
She and her husband settled in Copperas Cove, Texas. She was an active member of Rivers of Living Waters Church in Killeen, Texas for over 15 years. She was in the choir for a period of time, baked goods, and made baptismal and pastoral robes while she was a member. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed fishing, sewing and making crafts.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her first born child, Laurencita Renay Simmons (Thacker) and her eldest grandson Larry Orlando Brown, Jr. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 30 years, David Michael Morris. Her legacy is carried on by her daughters Kimmette (Frank Lee) “Kim” Lee of Milwaukee, Wisconsin & Keanue (Rickey Frantz) Simmons-Byrd Frantz of San Antonio, Texas. Grandaughters Kim Antionette Molet, Santana Renay Lee, and Alexis LaShaun Byrd. Grandsons Michael Anthony Cooper Jr, Branden Henry Lee, Tre’ Anthony Byrd, and Canaan Alexandre’ Frantz. She has been blessed with 14 great grandchildren.
