Sam was born July 25th, 1937 in Wadesboro, North Carolina to Annie and
Samuel Gatewood, the oldest of 5 children.
Sam is survived by his loving wife Hae R. Gatewood of Copperas Cove,
daughter Eugenia Andrew of Austin, and son Dennis Gatewood of Alaska.
Some of Papa Sam's proudest times were spent with grandkids Kevin and
Aspen Andrew of Austin, and Dayton Gatewood of Alaska.
"Shot" is also survived by sisters Shirley Leahy of Johnstown, Colorado,
Nancy Gulledge and Peggy Gatewood of Lilesville, North Carolina, and
brother Edmond Gatewood of Wadesboro, North Carolina.
Sam served almost 27 years in the US Army, with 1 tour in Vietnam and 5
tours in South Korea. He then went on to work for 14 more years for the US
Post Office in Austin before finally retiring to spend the rest of his time with
his wife, the love of his life. Sam died August 10th, 2013 at his home in
Copperas Cove.
