Services to celebrate the life of Charles E. Shipman, 88, will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at McPeters Funeral Home with Bro. Warren Jones officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Corinth National Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McPeters Funeral Home.
Charles passed on Saturday July 30, 2016 at his residence. He was born in Hardin Co. on September 7, 1927 to the late Edgar Charlie and Cleo Phillips Shipman. Charles was a graduate of Kossuth School and was a longtime member of Holly Baptist Church. He was a proud veteran of WWII and served in the Marine Corp. and the U.S. Army. At the age of 17 he joined the Marines and was stationed in Germany where his unit was responsible for testing the atomic bomb. After his service with the Marines he then joined the U.S. Army in order to return to Germany and worked as a border patrol agent. After his military service Charles had a successful career in construction. He traveled the United States and abroad building Holiday Inn's and other large hotels. When he retired from construction he started raising cattle with his good friend Steve Thompson. Charles was an active member for over 50 years with the American Legion where he received many honors and awards.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Briggs.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Edna Shipman of Corinth; two sons, Mike Shipman (Sherra) of Michie, TN and Mark Shipman (Patricia) of Kennesaw, GA; sister Geneva Shipman Putt; brother James ”Leevirl” Shipman; grandchildren, Chris Shipman, Bradley Shipman, Nicole Shipman, Julia Shipman, Ashley Shipman; step-grandchildren, Sam Devine, Rachael Devine, Rebecca McKinney; great-grandchild, Cayleigh Shipman and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
