He was born to the late Franklin Fillmore and Sara Rinehart Hinton on September 6, 1932. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He attended Corinth and Mississippi State University where he was a member of ROTC and earned a BS degree. He served in active duty of the United States Air Force from June 1954 until June 1957 and in the Air Force Reserves until October 1967. Dabney was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain.
Mr. Hinton returned to Corinth and joined Hinton Oil Company, Inc. As a Jobber for Shell Oil Company, he sold gasoline and diesel fuel to dealers and farmers. His ingenuity brought the first self-service stations, some with convenience stores, to Corinth, Iuka and Booneville. He also established Hinton Auto Parts and Hinton Car Wash. He retired in 1982. He enjoyed buying, selling and working on old cars. If it had a motor and wheels, Dabney was interested in it!
His passion for flying airplanes earned him a Pilot license and Instrument Certification. He flew his Cessna as a hobby. He was also a self-taught engineer and rarely encountered a problem he couldn’t solve.
Dabney is survived by his brother, Phil Hinton (Mary); children, Melinda Hinton Moore and Brent Hinton (Cindy); two grandsons, Landon Moore and Taylor Moore (Jenci); great granddaughters, Haley Moore and Piper Moore; nephews, Tracy Carter and Rich Hinton; and the mother of his children, Carolyn Hinton.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sarah Jane Hinton Finch; nephew, Brett Finch; and son-in-law, Philip Moore.
There will be a private family service at Henry Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of your choice.
