Gerald Clay Smith, Jerry to his friends and family, was born in Fulton, MS on April 17, 1963. He is the son of Barbara and Sammy Smith and was raised in and lived in Corinth, MS for most of his life. He attended Corinth Schools and was President of the student body his senior year, graduating from Corinth High School in 1981. He later attended Mississippi State University majoring in business. After a brief time working in Memphis, Jerry returned to Corinth where he worked at Smith and Associates specializing in municipal and large group health insurance. It was while working in Corinth that he met and married the love of his life, Treasa Stone Smith.
To know Jerry was to love him. He was a Tennessee Vols fan, much to the chagrin of Treasa who only partly converted him to the Maroon life. He loved playing golf and put together a team that won the National Fellowship of Christian Athletes Golf Scramble at the TPC course in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Jerry was a lifelong member of the Corinth First Methodist Church. He sang in the choir and served in an assortment of administrative positions.
Jerry’s faith was central to who he was and fostered in him a compassion that led to true generosity and a giving spirit. If you needed something from Jerry, you had but to ask. Though his body failed him, he never once failed any of us. His family would ask that, as you remember Jerry, reflect on the words of Dr. Seuss - "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
Jerry passed away on Wednesday, September 2. He is survived by his wife Treasa Stone Smith, son Brandon Smith, father Sammy Smith, brothers Jim and Ben Smith, a favorite aunt, Faye Smith, and the ever-present Pearl - his cat. He was preceded in death by his mother Barbara Smith and brother Bill Smith.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, at the First Methodist Church in Corinth, MS. A memorial service will follow at the church beginning at 3:00 p.m.
The family suggests that those who wish may donate in Jerry’s name to the First Methodist Church of Corinth, MS.
Arrangements are under the care of Memorial Funeral Home
