

Lonnie died on November 14, 2015 at Magnolia Regional Health Center. He was born September 7, 1933 to the late Herbert and Lillian Strickland Nelms. Lonnie served in the Army M.P. Corp, stationed in France. He started working in 1958 as a caretaker for Corinth National Cemetery and worked his way up to cemetery director. He also served as cemetery director for Natchez National Cemetery, Mobile AL National Cemetery, Marietta National Cemetery in GA and filled in as cemetery director at many National Cemeteries in the US. He worked hard and loved his career; he was very knowledgeable and knew where everyone was buried without having to look it up. He retired from the cemetery system in 1988 and worked part time at Murphy U.S.A. and Nelms Grocery. He enjoyed yard work and working on old cars of which he had a '37 Chevy Street Rod that he showed many years. He had many friends and was of the Baptist faith.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents; brother Lester Nelms and an infant sister.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Jackie Barker Nelms; three sons, Lonnie Joe Nelms and wife Darlene, Jackie L. “Rusty” Nelms, Jeffrey Lee Nelms and wife Maria; two brothers, Amos Nelms, Thomas Hill Nelms; four grandchildren, Brad Nelms and wife Amber, Chad Nelms and wife Lindsey, Trevor Nelms and wife Tina, Marisa Nelms; and ten great-grandchildren, Peyton, Drew, Taylor Reid, Hannah Grace, Ayla, Dylan, Clover, Jude.
