
A Memorial Service for Dr. Robert Earl Mathis, 78, of Corinth, is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Smith officiating. The family graveside service will be at Farmington Cemetery under the direction of McPeters Inc. Funeral Directors, Corinth, MS.
Dr. Mathis died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Magnolia Regional Health Center. He was a 1950 graduate of Corinth High School and a 1955 graduate of the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Corinth for over 50 years. He served on the State Board of Dental Examiners, and he was an instrumental part of starting the dental school in Jackson Mississippi. He also mentored many young dentists over the years. “Doc” will be remembered for his generous spirit of lending a helping hand to those in need. He was a member of First Baptist Church and loved being a part of the church choir.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lexington Borroum and Eleanor Byrd Mathis.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Mathis of Corinth; children, Dr. Phil Mathis(Cindy) and Mark Mathis, both of Corinth, Andy Madden (Susan) of Livermore, Calif., Meg Scales (Jon) of Starkville, and Liza Butler of Corinth; a brother, Jimmy Mathis (Jeanella) of Cochise, Ariz.; grandchildren, Taylor Mathis (Kellie), Ben Mathis, John Mathis, and Madden Butler; and a great-granddaughter, Morgan Mathis.
The family will receive friends in the Welcome Center of First Baptist Church following the service.
