
Willie J. Cartwright, 94, died Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Mississippi Care Center. Mr. Cartwright was a member of East Corinth Baptist Church for approximately sixty years where he served as Deacon for many years. In 2004 “Deacon Emeritus” was confirmed upon him in recognition of his faithful deacon ministery to East Corinth Baptist Church. The church presented him with a plaque in appreciation for his many years of leadership. Mr. Cartwright was a veteran of the United States Army during WWII. He served in France, Germany, Italy and Africa. He was a true son of a confederate soldier and enjoyed attending meetings of the Sons of the Confederate Soldiers. He was a retired maintenance mechanic for Spun Steel, following retirements he worked for many years at Gardner’s Super Market. Prior to Spun Steel he was employed by Corinth Brick and Tile. By the time Mr. Willie was sixty-six years of age he had donated over ten gallons of blood to the American Red Cross.
Funeral services will be Monday, May 9, 2011, at 11:00 am. At McPeters Inc. Funeral Directors with Rev. Ralph Culp officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, May 8, 2011 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Forrest Memorial Park Garden.
Survivors include one son, Harvey Cartwright (Wanda) of Corinth; two daughters, Janet Smith (R.E. ) of Murfressboro and Melanie Luce of Corinth. His grandchildren; Lisa Fluty (Mark) Tina Prosser (Jack); Julie Driskell (Keith); Jay Cartwright (fiancé) Courtney Wilkins, Brittanni Lynch (Derrick); great grandchildren Jessica Hastings (Tim), Jeremy England (fiancé) Brittany Welkley), Ty, Jaden Grace and Riley Driskell: Great Great Grandson, Mason Hastings; a step sister Levada Anderson and a special caregiver Shelly Hancock.
Mr. Cartwright was preceded in death by his parents, John Harvey and Laura Jobe Cartwright; and his wife, of fifty-seven years Virginia Cartwright; a brother Isom Cartwright and Robert Parson; sisters, Laura Harville and Ada Gurley.
