Bible Teacher at Shillington Community Church
Firstly, Becky and I extend our prayers and heartfelt sympathies and
deepest sorrow to all the family at this time. To Doris, Kathy, and
Barbara, and all your children, to all the Fulton family, I want you to
know that all of Shillington Community Church are grieving with you.
While unable to attend the funeral, thank you for allowing us to write
this tribute to this wonderful and gracious follower of Jesus.
I would like to say firstly that Myrtle was a faithful wife, a loving
mother and a fun spirited member of God's family here at Shillington
Community Church. We first met Myrtle and Scotty when they started
attending meetings at Shillington Community Church in 2008. We
always knew they had arrived at meetings, because we would start to
hear Myrtle and Scotty jubilant voices as they joined in the singing old
time favourite hymns. We got to know them better as the days turned
into years, and their charm, wit and fun-loving spirit was so
contagious. Myrtle had her own wise sayings too....she once
commented when I quoted Romans 8:28 “All things work together for
good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose”
with this statement. We have a saying in the old country..... “If it is
meant for ye...it won't go by ye!”
While Myrtle was beginning to show signs of slowing of memory, she
continued to enjoy singing and God's word. When Myrtle became
more sick and needed to be admitted to hospital, Scotty was
determined to visit regularly and yet bring her to as many meetings as
he was able. Each Sunday, almost without exception, Scotty would
wheel in Myrtle to the meetings at Shillington, and sit in the second
row from the front. There they would join and sing wonderful gospel
songs, Myrtle's cheerful voice singing such hymns as “Tis so sweet to
trust in Jesus, just to take him at His word, just to trust upon His
promise, just to know thus saith the Lord”
On April 23, 2012, I visited with Myrtle's at hospital. Upon entering
the room, Myrtle opened her eyes, sat up and after greeting me with
'Hi Dave' ...she then spoke at some length about feeling abandoned.'
She was struggling with why was she here and Scotty at home? After
60 years, it was only natural that Myrtles security was in Scotty and
the home and she was feeling fearful being away. She also indicated
that she was feeling very fearful. I asked what was she afraid of. She
couldn't put it into words. I asked if she was able to sleep at night, and
she said that she didn't sleep very well. We read Phil. 4 6 Be anxious for
nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with
thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7and the peace
of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
minds through Christ Jesus. “Than I asked her if she had ever
accepted the Lord into her heart, to which she replied that she had
prayed in her mind this. I explained that sometimes it helps if one
prays out loud and would she like to pray following me? She said yes.
And she prayed the following (as best as I can remember)
Thank you God for sending your son Jesus to die for my sins. I now
invite you into my heart. You have said that if we call upon the name
of the Lord, you will save us, and I am now calling upon you. Please
come into my heart and take away all my sin. Take away my fear, and I
thank you for eternal life. In Jesus name, Amen. She seemed so
encouraged to pray this.
Following Scotty's departure for heaven in 2015, we continued to visit
with Myrtle at the hospital, but soon discovered that Myrtle moved
south as family was wanting to be closer. We were encouraged that
during these past years, she has been lovingly cared for, and been
close to family. Now Myrtle is in the presence of heaven. She is there
with her Saviour, Jesus. And she is there with Scotty, having a good
laugh, and enjoying paradise. “You will show me the path of life; in
Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures
forevermore. (Ps. 16:11)
May the God whom Myrtle loved strengthen, comfort and challenge
you to trust in Jesus, even during this time.
Blessings from the north, Dave and Becky Jenkinson (S.C.C.)
