

Albert “Al” Hollinden passed away on February 21, 2022, at the age of 95 in his hometown of Murrieta, California. He was the oldest of five children born to Edward and Elizabeth Hollinden on April 4, 1926, in Ferdinand, Indiana. He was an amazing husband, father, grandpa, and great grandpa.
At the age of 17 Al enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he met his wife of 57 years, Bonnie. He served 22 years in the Air Force during three wars: WW II, Korea, and Vietnam. He spent his military career chasing typhoons as a Typhoon Reconnaissance Officer and flew through the eye of twenty-six typhoons. He and his family lived overseas in Guam and Japan. Al also managed to earn a BS in Geography from the University of Illinois, a BS in Civil Engineering, and an MS in Meteorology from the University of Michigan. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of major in 1965.
While working at McDonald Douglas in their space program, he and his family moved to Fountain Valley, California in 1966. He was a city council member for 12 years and served as mayor for three of those years. He eventually became involved in the transportation field and served as Chairman of the Orange County Transportation Commission for 13 years. He and Bonnie moved to Irvine, California for many years before retiring in Murrieta, to be close to their children.
Al and Bonnie loved to cruise. Their destinations included the Caribbean, South America, the Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska. Their best travels though included the family with many weekends at resorts on Mission Bay, San Diego.
Al is survived by his four children; Mike Hollinden (Jody), Amy Dalby (Lyle), Cari Thompkins, and Lucy Blumenshine (Rob), 9 grandchildren; Kelly, Scott, Pat, Holly, Kim, Adam, Gina, Max, and Sam, and six great grandchildren. He also leaves behind siblings Ray (Ann) and Steve (Nancy) Hollinden, Mary Ellen Wehrle, and sister-in-law, Mary Kay Hollinden.
His immediate family will gather for his inurnment on March 4, 2022, at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona Del Mar, California
