Albert F Tien

Dr. Tien was a physicist, engineer, inventor, and business leader whose work bridged advanced technology and global manufacturing. After graduating from the Physics Department at National Taiwan University, he earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Illinois Institute of Technology and later an MBA from the University of Chicago. He then built a career in electro-optical engineering and manufacturing leadership.

During his 20 years at ITT, Dr. Tien combined technical innovation with global business leadership. He was named as an inventor on several patents involving optical and image-intensifier technologies, including advances used in Generation III night-vision systems. Although this work may be the most recognizable today, his contributions to ITT’s high-reliability connector business were equally significant, supporting critical aerospace and industrial applications, including Boeing aircraft. He served as President for the Asia-Pacific region in Hong Kong before assuming broader leadership responsibility for North America and Europe.

In 2003, he founded Global Manufacturing Network (GMN) in Orange County, California, where he served as Chairman and CEO and helped customers solve complex contract manufacturing, sourcing, logistics, and supply chain challenges across North America and Asia. Because of his extensive business experience, Dr. Tien was also asked to teach MBA classes part-time at the University of California at Irvine for five years.

He and his beloved wife, Marjorie Tien, shared 55 years of marriage, marked by deep love and companionship through life's many blessings. They shared a love of cruise travel and exploring the world together. While his wife attended seminary, he wholeheartedly supported her every step of the way. After her graduation, when she became a minister, he continued to encourage and support her calling.

Dr. Tien valued friendship and maintained close relationships with colleagues throughout his career as well as with many lifelong friends. He enjoyed reading, classical Chinese poetry, mathematics, fine wine, walking, and swimming, and passed his passion for aerospace and technology on to his two children. He cherished time with family and friends, especially his grandson, to whom he was a kind, loving, and devoted grandfather.

His passing leaves family and friends with a profound sense of loss. They will forever cherish his memory and carry forward the love, wisdom, and values he shared throughout his life.

Dr. Tien is preceded in death by sister Mei-Chi Tien and son Henry Tien. He is survived by his beloved wife Marjorie Tien, daughter Christine Tien, grandson Alexander Boswell, and nephews.

Viewings will be held on Thursday, July 23rd 4-6pm and Friday, July 24th 9-10AM at Pacific View Mortuary and Memorial Park at 3500 Pacific View Drive, Corona Del Mar, CA 92625. A funeral service with internment will be held on Friday, July 24th at 10am.
