Betty Anne Harline
January 30, 1928 – July 13, 2014
Betty Anne Harline, 86, passed away while still enjoying living in her home of 40 years surrounded by family memories that she so cherished.
Betty was born in Portland, Oregon, to her parents Edward W. and Pearl I. Parsons. As a child, they moved first to Seattle, Washington, and then to Los Angeles, California, as her father held successively responsible positions for Mannings Foods. Betty was so proud of her adoring “Daddy” as he partnered with Jim Dunn to create Du-par’s Restaurant & Bakery and build it into a chain of more than a dozen locations. Ed would not allow his daughter to compete with his employees for certain jobs so she eagerly sold pies out of the original Los Angeles Farmer’s Market location.
Betty earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from UCLA. She was forever a die hard Bruins fan and fascinated with all things English. First her father, then Betty, held UCLA football season tickets for over 30 years. At UCLA she joined Chi Omega and lived in the on-campus sorority house. There she met her first husband, Marvin L. Sargent. Betty held various positions such as Executive Assistant and later became devoted to philanthropic causes. She served in various capacities, including president and events chairman, for her local Chi Omega and Panhellenic chapters and the Assistance League of Newport-Mesa. Betty was truly honored in receiving Panhellenic’s Athena award, its highest accolade for service. She was also instrumental in starting the Assistance League’s consignment store that helped support dental care for disadvantaged local children. At home, Betty kept an immaculate house and tended to her beloved garden, which included over 100 lush potted plants.
Betty is survived by her sons Stephen and Robert Sargent, grandchildren Geoffrey and Amanda, and great grandchildren Cash, Lily, Jameson and Annalise. Following her sister Nancy J. Fallin’s serious illness and too young passing, Betty played important roles in the lives of nieces Lori, Leslie and Kelly and nephew Roger. Betty was a worthy heir to her mother Pearl’s matriarchal role.
A memorial and celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 2 pm at Pacific View Memorial Park Chapel in Corona del Mar. Contributions to Assistance League of Newport-Mesa in Betty’s name would be a fitting tribute to the work for which she was most proud.
Arrangements under the direction of Pacific View Memorial Park and Mortuary FD1176, Corona Del Mar, CA.
