Burton Howard Weinberger graced the world with his impeccable sense of humor on September 18th, 1937, and left us wanting more on June 29th, 2016. He was 78 years old. He was a father, a son, a brother, a grandfather, a friend, a volunteer, and a professional coupon clipper.
Burton, or “Burt” for short, grew up in Chicago, Illinois. In his younger years, Burt went to Von Stueben High School, and then Drake University, in Iowa, followed. He also happened to belong to a Jewish fraternity. Mazel tov! In 1957, he and his family moved to California, which kick-started his love for working. He began at Blue Haven Pools, and later went on to run a popular stationary store in Downey, California. It was 1958 when his father, Al, bought him the store, Neil’s Stationers, to keep him out of trouble, and it ended up working out to his advantage. He owned and ran Neil’s until 1999 when he retired. This is when the “old fart” jokes began. Up until he was physically unable, Burt met one of his sons, David, every Tuesday afternoon for lunch, volunteered at the local Jewish Community Center every Thursday morning, and relaxed in the Jacuzzi with a cigar and a couple friends in between. He always managed to have a tub of Red Vines in his cupboard, packets of Clorets gum in his fridge, and great big bear hugs for anyone that wanted one. Everyone who met Burt knew he had a heart of gold and a tight pocket. He just loved those coupons!
Both of Burt’s wonderful parents, Clara and Al, along with his loyal and loving dog, Max, are with him right now, as they passed on before him. He will be leaving behind his son David, David’s wife Marlene, and their three children: Pete, Alyssa, and Michelle. He will also be leaving behind his other son Steve, Steve’s wife Roni, and his four children: Elizabeth, Sydney, Zachary, and Grayson.
The service celebrating Burt’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 13th at 10am in the morning. It will be at the Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona Del Mar, California.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may plant a tree in Israel in his name at shiva.com.
