Dan passed away after a long battle with cancer at his home on Balboa Island. Dan was the son of Joseph and Janet Mariscal. He grew up in the hills of Los Angeles and enjoyed playing sports around the neighborhood with his brother Richard and their friends. He spent summers at Balboa, often fishing and boating with his island friends and lifeguarding at Emerald Bay. He graduated from John Marshall High School as the Student Body President and attended the University of Arizona, where he joined the cheerleading squad as the “yell king” and became a member of the Phi Gamma Delta (“Fiji”) fraternity.
While there, he met Jane McClanahan Mariscal with whom he shared 48 wonderful years of marriage. After their wedding they moved to Colorado Springs while he completed his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Dan and Jane then settled in Sherman Oaks where Dan began his career with Hirsch Pipe and Supply as an assistant bookkeeper and worked his way up to become a general manager. In 1978, he bought the company with fewer than thirty employees. During his tenure as president and CEO, he expanded the company to become master distributors for several major lines of plumbing and developed an online sales platform. He also built Hirsch’s national reputation by going to the ASA (American Supply Association) shows and becoming president of the PSDA (Pacific Southwest Distributor Association). Over the course of his career, he poured his heart into Hirsch, and thought of his company as a second family. In this time, he and Jane also built their own family, which would become the cornerstone of his life. He became a devoted father to two children, Susan and Greg, throwing himself into science projects and sports games. He especially enjoyed family ski trips and summers on Balboa Island.
In 2000, Dan sold Hirsch and he and Jane moved to Balboa Island full time to be near the ocean. Together they enjoyed boating with the Balboa Yacht Club and traveling all over the world until her passing in 2010. Dan continued to live on the island and was known for his daily walks, always with stops to say hello to all his friends. He never wanted to miss a Little Balboa Island Property Owners Association meeting where he was “Social Chairman.” He kept a busy social calendar full of dinner parties, college football games, and reunions with his Fiji brothers. He especially loved taking his dear friend Barbara, his assistant Christina, and other friends for cruises around Balboa aboard his boat, the Mari-rascal. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, including his four grandchildren, describing these visits as “perfect happiness.”
Dan is survived by his daughter Susan M. Glockner and her husband Bill, his son Greg Mariscal and his wife Lucinda, and his four grandchildren Katie (fiancé Mike), Will, Alyssa, and Henry, along with his brother, Richard Mariscal (wife Elaine). The Mariscals would like to thank their family and dear friends who provide such loving support during this difficult time. We will always remember Dan for his determination and can-do spirit, his sense of humor, and his dedication to those he loved. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 20th in Newport Beach at Pacific View at 11 am. A celebration of life at his beloved Balboa Yacht Club will follow at 12:30pm.
