He was born to Louise and George Mersch on April 24, 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended St. Xavier High School and earned his Bachelor Degree majoring in Accounting at Xavier University. After working in the Audit and Administration Services Division of Arthur Anderson and serving as Vice President of Paxton Machine Co. in Salem Ohio, Don joined a young and innovative enterprise, Paychex, where he worked for the next 20 years, the last 5 as VP of Operations for the Western Division.
Lovingly called Mr. Spreadsheet by friends, Don had a passion for anything he tackled and a strong commitment to serve friends and community. After his retirement he became very involved with Corazon, an organization whose mission is to “build communities across borders.” Although best known for building houses for the poor in the Tijuana and Tecate areas, Corazon has recognized that the people in the houses are more important than the physical structures. They focus their efforts on social development programs and youth programs that include scholarships that allow the youth to complete their education, an integral step in breaking the cycle of poverty. Corazon was also meaningful to Don as he met his wife Pat on a house-building trip over 25 years ago. He served as Treasurer on Corazon’s Board of Directors and was bestowed their highest award for his tireless efforts.
A busy man in retirement, Don loved golf and was a member of the Newport Beach Country Club where he played every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with a foursome of friends he truly enjoyed. He also enjoyed serving as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady Queen of Angels, and embraced any opportunity to travel with family and friends.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Pat, his two children, Bradley Mersch of Westport, Massachusetts and Courtney Mersch Young of Irvine, California as well as two grandsons, Evan and Brady Mersch. He also has two brothers, Jerome Mersch of Cary, North Carolina and William Mersch of Groton, Massachusetts who survive him.
He was a gentleman of integrity, joy, optimism and great generosity. He loved life and especially his family. One of his favorite sayings was “Whatever you do, have fun!”
