Mel was raised in Cleveland and Toledo and distinguished himself early in life through his intellect, discipline, and character. He graduated first in his class from The Ohio State University, summa cum laude with distinction and went on to earn his PhD in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley. He had an accomplished career as a professor of accounting and finance at the University of Rochester and Berkeley, and has authored numerous publications. Later, he founded and served as CEO of Software Solutions International, where he combined his academic expertise with entrepreneurial vision. In the years that followed, he remained a trusted advisor and consultant.
While his professional accomplishments were many, Mel’s proudest and most meaningful roles were those of devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather. Family was the center of his life, and nothing brought him greater happiness than having those he loved gathered together.
Mel is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Laura Krasney; daughters Cara of San Diego and Melissa (Nick) of London; son Daniel (Julie) of San Diego; and his adored grandchildren, Blake, Chase, and Emmy. He also leaves behind his brother, Robert and Sister, Debra, and many extended family members and friends who will miss him greatly.
Mel found joy in life’s simple pleasures: long walks, road trips, afternoons on Lake Erie, coaching his children, helping with homework, sharing music, a good book, a strong scotch, Pepe’s pizza, ice cream, and time spent with those he loved most. He had a rare way of making people feel cared for, and he showed up for every moment, big and small.
He will be remembered for his brilliance, kindness, humor, steady presence, and the deep care he showed everyone around him.
A private funeral for immediate family will be held at Pacific View Memorial at 10:00 am on Sunday, May 7th. Shiva will follow from 1:00 pm. at the home of Laura Krasney with a second night being held on Monday, May 11th at the home of Debra Kornswiet-Shandling starting at 6:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association in Mel’s honor.
