Husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, physician, and "chief cook and bottle washer," Morris Fier passed away peacefully in Newport Beach on April 18, 2016. He was 93. His wife of 38 years, Roberta June Fier, preceded him in death in 1992.
Morris was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on April 14, 1923 to parents Solomon and Mary Fier. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in
1941 and served through the end of World War II. After the war, he enrolled in a special 5-year college/medical school program at the University of Toronto and graduated with an M.D. in 1950. While interning at Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, he had a run-in with a young nurse, Roberta, over a patient's uncooperative bladder. Despite the rocky beginning, they married in 1954. After a November honeymoon at Niagara Falls, they moved to Southern California where they began a family and he started his career as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon. He practiced for more than 30 years at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, serving as Chief of Staff in 1967. He retired from his medical practice in 1994. In retirement he kept busy with family, hobbies, and weekly visits with his retired doctor friends to Mimi's and a Hoag Hospital seminar series.
Besides Roberta, he is predeceased by brother Jack and wife Sylvia, and sister Ruth and husband Ben. He is survived by children Scott and wife Patricia, Jeffrey and wife Kathy Lee, David, Timothy and wife Dana, and Susan and husband Scott; grandchildren Jared, Zachary, Nathan, Alec, Anna and Troy and wife Ashley; nephew Martin and wife Arlene; and nieces Myra and husband Rick, Sharon and husband Michael, and Marla. For all those who cared for Morris in his final years at Newport Senior Living we are deeply grateful.
A celebration of his life will be held at Pacific View Memorial Park on April 25th at 10am.
