Edward (Ed) Rimpau was born June 8, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, the son of Edward Rimpau Sr. and Helen Burntrager Rimpau. The family lineage dates back some nine generations to its origin in a Spanish Land Grant in colonial California. Ed Jr. also affectionately known as “Poo Bear” to children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, passed away peacefully at home on Lido Isle, Newport Beach, California surrounded by family on September 17, 2022.
Growing up in Los Angeles, Rimpau attended Hollywood High School followed by military service in the U.S. Navy. He was accepted into officer training and sent to Kansas, then Houston for instruction. While stationed in Texas he would meet his future wife Jean at a cantina for military students. She was selected among her sorority sisters to help serve soft drinks. Rimpau was instantly smitten. Old-fashioned “love at first sight”. Asking to walk Jean home, he met her mother and requested permission to escort Jean to Mass on Sunday. They were married shortly there after.
Following military service, Rimpau attended Rice University and worked on a degree in engineering. The newlyweds then relocated back to Los Angeles, moved in with the Senior Rimpau at Park La Brea, and Ed finished his degree at UCLA.
His professional career began with Farmers Insurance Group, followed by further relationships with Penn Life Insurance Company and Beverly Enterprises. Moving from L.A. to Pasadena to raise their three children, Rimpau would retire early at age 42 and later move the family to Lido Isle on the Newport waterfront.
Boating was his love and hobby. He and his best friend Ed Cancilla, jointly owned their first boat, a 28’ sailboat named RICA. In 1972 Rimpau would join the Newport Harbor Yacht Club and remain an active member for half a century.
Devoted to his wife and family, Ed Rimpau shared 62 years of marriage with Jean, who pre-deceased him in 2008. They traveled extensively including some thirty-five cruise adventures.
Ed was a devout Catholic and after Jean passed away, Ed turned to his church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Newport Beach for comfort. He attended daily Rosary, daily Devine Mercy Chaplet and daily Mass and became very close friends with many fellow parishioners. They all felt special when in his company. One of his best buddies was Father Sean Condon. Rimpau was active in the Knights of Columbus, was in charge of the Sunday donuts and counting the Sunday offerings. He lived his life rooted in Jesus. He was a blessing to all the people he met.
Rimpau is survived by two of his three children, Kenneth Rimpau and Kim Frazier, daughter Lynda predeceased him in 2017. He also leaves his son-in-law, John Frazier, and Lynda’s husband, son-in-law, Dane Churney, his 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Rimpau always said, “God loves me”, and everyone knew it was true.
