Edwin F Steen Jr.

Edwin F. Steen Jr., 86, of Corona del Mar, passed away peacefully in his home on August 11th after a long struggle with Parkinson’s. Ed was born in San Francisco May 20th, 1927. He lived locally on Balboa Island and Corona del Mar for the past 55 years. He was an avid yachtsman and golfer and in later years enjoyed motor homing in his ‘land yacht’, Truant 1, named after his treasured 42’ DeFever, Truant. Always an energetic leader he took his turn as president of the Balboa Island Homeowners Association, Commodore of the Balboa Yacht Club, President & Director of the California Pacers RV Club, President & Director of La Quinta’s Home Owners Assn., and golfed at the Newport Beach Country Club and La Quinta Country Club.

Mr. Steen served in the U.S. navy Air Corp. in WWII and completed a business education at UCLA in 1948. Following a brief attempt at mining at the Yellow Jacket Mine in Idaho with his brothers Dan and John, he spent until 1955 working for Standard Oil Co.

A career in real estate and land development commenced in 1955 where among a number of building and development companies he co-founded Standard-Pacific Corporation, a major residential building company. After retiring from Standard- Pacific in 1975 he continued to actively pursue real estate investment and development until the last year or two before his passing.

He was a loving family man who loved parties and entertaining with his wife, Ruth and spent many summers taking his family on trips on his yacht, truant, and traveling to the family property at the Yellow Jacket Mine. He was an incredibly strong, admired and remarkable man, and he will be truly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and the many friends and lives he touched. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth; daughter, Lori; son, Edwin III; grandchildren, Edwin IV, Amy and husband David, Terry and wife Lani; and great-granddaughters, Grace and Sophia.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 10th, at 1:00 pm at the Balboa Yacht Club, 1801 Bayside Dr., Corona del Mar.
