Play Tribute Movie

Evonne Marcia Vernola was born in San Francisco, California on March 11, 1933 to Dora and Henry Goobich. She enjoyed a vibrant youth with her brother Stan, surrounded by grandparents, great-grandparents, cousins, and the local community. Here she met Ann Abitsch (Fuselier), whom she shared a friendship with that surpassed 70 years. Evonne experienced the premature loss of her father Henry at age 8, impacting her childhood years and requiring adult responsibilities as a youth to help support her family. As a young woman Evonne worked in medical research, followed by many jobs throughout her life requiring her skills in shorthand; writing; communication; and typing. Although leaving the Bay Area to relocate to Southern California in the early 1970s, San Francisco always remained Evonne’s favorite place. Throughout Evonne’s life she excelled in human connections; she focused on giving, not receiving, and lived to love. Her nickname was “Sunshine” because of her vivacious personality and beaming smile. Evonne met Sam Vernola, the love of her life, in Anaheim, Ca in 1972. They were married in 1974 in a union that would span more than 46 years, bearing one daughter, Holly-Ann Rosa-Lee Vernola. Evonne’s life was devoted to her family; she supported everyone around her, unfaltering and genuine. She would provide small (or sometimes significant) gifts to almost anyone who crossed her path in a symbol of gratitude to family, friends, and community. These gifts were always accompanied by heartfelt, handwritten notes. She was also a strong-believer in supporting charities throughout her life for causes she believed in, such as animal protection and Jewish foundations. One of Evonne’s greatest joys later in life was becoming a grandmother to Holly’s & Dion’s two children, Capri and Nico. Evonne was taken from us by Parkinson’s disease, which she struggled with for more than a decade, on the afternoon of Friday July 17, 2020, age 87. Evonne is survived by her younger brother Stan Goodrich; her loving husband Sam Vernola; her loving daughter, Holly Vernola Angelopoulos; her Son-in-Law Dion Angelopoulos; her granddaughter Capri Penelope Angelopoulos (age 10); and her grandson Nico Julian Angelopoulos (age 9).

There are NO WORDS to describe what a void and loss I feel, but at the same time remembering ALL the good times and memories. "Sunshine" will live on forever........she introduced my parents and as a result I came into this world! She was a second mom to me. I would call her and "bear my heart", sometimes telling her that I could not tell my mom these things as I did not want her to worry. She ALWAYS had encouraging words, a heartfelt desire to help if needed and of course utmost care and concern for everyone and their lives. No wonder her and my mom had over a 70yr. relationship!! Her daughter Holly is my "little sister".......and Sunshine's spirit lives on in her! She holds soooo many qualities that her mom had. All my love from the bottom of my heart. Rene

Dear Evonne (and family): Thank you ... for always accepting me just as I am. Thank you ... for making me laugh, tear up and feel genuinely loved. Thank you ... for being 100% real, open and vivacious. You're family to me, despite our having met when I was already into adulthood--albeit barely. You're with us, we're with you and together we comprise a family of friends and loved ones worth celebrating. Your letters, notes and cards are with me and I often enjoy reading them over and over again. xo

How does one convey a single memory to summarize a lifetime of wonderful memories? Evonne was my sister, but she was also my best friend.

I first met Evonne at four years old when she was taking afternoon walks through the neighborhood with Holly in a carriage. A cherished memory was a few years later when my brother and I were invited to Holly's birthday party and to my amazement Evonne gave each of us the coolest Star Wars toy's.

Evonne's walks continued for many decades and I always enjoyed crossing paths with her and Sam. She always had the most positive outlook and took interest in knowing how I or the family were doing. My admiration for her deepened even further the last few years as I saw how hard she fought keep up with with her walks. She truly had unbelievable determination.

I will miss our conversations and her bright smile.

My deepest sympathy to Sam, Holly, and family.

I have known Evonne all my life, being a first cousin (Dora was my mother's sister (Blanche Wolf). I loved Evonne as the high energy, loving , generous person she was. She had an infectious laugh and as a teenager, she went gaga over men in uniform. She was lucky to have found Sam. Sam gave her Holly and Holly gave her two beautiful grand children. It was as though her life had just begun when she gave birth to Holly. Evonne loved her family. She loved her brother her aunts, her cousins and would tell them often.

In the last decade, we did not get to see one another very often, but kept in touch via emails and phone calls. We had a nickname for Evonne, "Bonzel" but I can't remember how that name came about. I will always remember Evonne as someone that lit up the room when she entered, with a big smile on her face, and hugs for everyone.

God bless you Evonne. Rest in peace.

Love, Evan and Phyllis.

Evonne's smile brightened up a room. She gave from her heart, in her conversations, in her hand-written notes and in her words of wisdom. I was the fortunate recipient of all of these. Evonne shared her love of old movies with me, she shared stories about her life, she asked good questions and she gave me advice at a pivotal time in my life. Evonne was thrilled to hear when I found a "good Jewish boyfriend!" She and I also shared a love of frozen yogurt from the same shop, Golden Spoon! I am so happy my brother married Evonne's daughter Holly. Like her mother, Holly exhibits strength and a genuine love for her family. I am grateful to have shared wonderful experiences with Evonne and that we also became family. Evonne was a beautiful, genuine and loving person. Her spirit lives on in Holly and her grandchildren.

Very generous with her time and talents. She felt like family and was a good friend and neighbor. She spoke of her family frequently; Sam, Stan, Holly and her Grand children. Evonne, you will be missed. Love you. The Couchmans.
