Born on August 24, 1949, to Ronald and Billie Barnes, Gerald developed a deep love for cars and the Dodgers early in life, passions that stayed with him always. But the most defining moment of his youth came as a teenager at El Segundo High School, where he met Debbie Morgan, who would become not only his high school sweetheart but the love of his life. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three children (Matt, Meri, and Megan).
To know Gerald was to know unwavering love, quiet strength, loyalty, extravagant generosity and wholehearted devotion to family. Whether he was coaching his kids’ sports teams, driving in his cars listening to oldies, having Saturday morning breakfasts with you, strolling through car shows, exploring Carmel and New York City with Debbie, or soaking up the sunshine on family trips to Maui; Gerald always showed up for the people he loved. His presence was steady, joyful, and full of heart.
When most people think of Gerald, they think of his extraordinary generosity. It was next-level: quiet, sincere, and without expectation. If he saw a need, he met it. If he could make someone’s life easier, he did. Often, he and Debbie would pray together about how best to help, letting faith guide their giving. Gerald wasn’t just kind; he was a life-changer, often stepping in behind the scenes to support, uplift, and care for others in ways they may never have expected but always deeply felt.
Gerald had a fun-loving, playful spirit and never shied away from a good practical joke. Even in the face of his toughest battle, a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia, he held onto that sense of humor. He met his illness with courage and grace, continuing to make jokes and bring smiles to those around him.
Nine years ago, Gerald stepped into a role he had long looked forward to: becoming a grandfather. Known lovingly as “Pops,” he was everything a grandchild could hope for: playful, patient, supportive, and endlessly proud. His love for his eight grandchildren knew no bounds, and the feeling was mutual.
Gerald was, quite simply, the best dad and Pops ever. His family’s admiration for him is immeasurable, and his legacy lives on through the love and strength he poured into each of them.
He is deeply missed and survived by his cherished wife, Debbie; his children, Matt (and wife Stacy), Meri, and Megan (and husband Norm), his grandchildren: Sawyer, McCoy, Violet, Weldon, Poppy, Shae, Kai, and Ren, his brother Vaughn (and wife Erin); and his nieces and nephews.
Though their hearts are heavy, the family takes comfort in knowing Gerald is now at peace in the presence of his Lord and Savior.
A celebration of Gerald’s life will be held in the coming weeks. Service details will be shared soon.
