

Dr. Gurmit Sandhu, a devoted father and prominent former cardiologist in the Phoenix area passed away peacefully in Laguna Niguel, California on December 18th, 2025. Dr. Sandhu was born in Punjab, India in 1941 and immigrated to the UK in his early years. He attended university at University of Birmingham and Cambridge, where he graduated from medical school and obtained a PhD. His medical internship was at Birmingham and Nottingham General, and his medical residency was at the Royal Infirmary in Leeds and Sefton General in Liverpool.
Dr. Sandhu was a member of the Royal Colleges of Physicians in the UK and Canada. He immigrated from Canada to the United States after obtaining an NIH fellowship for cardiovascular research in Kentucky. Notably, his entry into the United States included a letter signed by the then Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger. After his tenure in Kentucky, Dr. Sandhu relocated to Phoenix, Arizona where he started a family, and practiced cardiology for several decades. Dr. Sandhu spent his retirement in pursuit of his lifelong passions - mathematics, physics, reading, and spending time with his family.
Dr. Sandhu is survived by his four daughters Andreana, Karina, Alaina, and Maryana, his three grandchildren, Dylan, Aidan, and Autumn, his sister Gurmita, his brother Sukhdav, his partner of many years Shirley, and the countless families of patients whose lives he impacted.
Dr. Sandhu’s Celebration of Life will be held at Pacific View Mortuary in Corona Del Mar at 10:00 AM on January 11th, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a donation to the American Heart Association be made on his behalf.
