James “Jim” Alexiou, 93, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who cherished classical music, traveling the world, and the simple pleasure of reading his newspapers, beginning to end, every morning. Those who knew him will forever remember his intelligence and tenacity, but also his unmistakable dry sense of humor—sharp, surprising, and very much intact until the very end.
Born in 1932 to Mary and George Alexiou in Manchester, New Hampshire, Jim was the youngest of six siblings. After completing his early education, he served in the U.S. Army, where he cultivated the discipline and sense of responsibility that would guide him throughout his life.
It was during his leave from the army, while visiting his friend Spiro “Spike” Gokas, that Jim met Elaine Lantas—Spike’s cousin and the love of Jim’s life. Married for 62 years, Jim and Elaine shared many passions, including their love of the arts, excitement for new experiences, and the uncanny ability to always tell it like it is. Whether preparing meals side by side in their kitchen or discovering new cultures and cuisines during their travels, they approached each adventure with curiosity, humor, and a deep appreciation for one another’s company.
After Jim earned his Master of Economics from Boston University, he and Elaine began their family in Massachusetts with the arrivals of Stephanie and Thomas. In 1970, the family relocated to Irvine, where Jim became the CEO & chairman of Irvine Sensors. He was deeply admired for his leadership, sound judgment, and unwavering integrity—qualities that earned the respect of his colleagues and left a meaningful, lasting impact on the organization.
Jim was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, as well as a founding member and former president of St. Paul’s Foundation. He was also a passionate supporter of music and culture, serving on the Philharmonic Society of Orange County’s Board of Directors. He even was given the opportunity to conduct the orchestra once, and practiced so intensely that he had to ice his wrist.
More than anything, Jim found joy in his family. He never missed an opportunity to be present for his children and grandchildren—whether at graduations, school performances, sports events, or celebrations. Jim was able to meet both of his great-grandchildren, Nate and Ellie Ryan, and loved receiving new photos of his family on his electronic frame.
Jim was a wonderful presence and a respected figure in every community he touched. His family takes comfort in knowing that he and Elaine are watching over them now, martinis in hand, gently tapping along to their favorite classical music.
Jim is survived by his children Stephanie Hubbard (Nate Hubbard) and Thomas Alexiou, his grandchildren Celia Ryan (Jimmy Ryan), Kate Hubbard (Nick Sorice), James Alexiou, Lily Hubbard, Sophia Alexiou, Bennett Alexiou, and his great-grandchildren Nate and Ellie Ryan.
