Born on June 4, 1947, in Watrous, Saskatchewan, Canada, Joan was the daughter of Dorothy and James Porter. She was a fun surprise that arrived after her elder siblings, Judy and Jim. From an early age, she exhibited a nurturing spirit and a keen sense of style—qualities that would remain central to her identity throughout her life.
Joan pursued a career in nursing, becoming a registered nurse. Her dedication to her profession was evident in the care and compassion she extended to her patients. Known for being hard-working and talented in her field, Joan brought warmth and empathy to every room she entered. Her career as a caring nurse left a lasting impact on those she served and worked alongside.
Beyond her professional life, Joan found joy in many personal passions. She had an eye for fashion and loved shopping for stylish pieces that reflected her vibrant personality. Cooking was another of her great pleasures—she delighted in preparing meals for family gatherings and quiet evenings alike. Her mac and cheese and apple pie recipes are legendary. She also enjoyed watching movies, often finding comfort and entertainment in cinematic stories, and reading mystery novels on her Kindle.
Joan’s greatest pride was her family. She is lovingly remembered by her son Todd Hilken and his wife Melissa, along with their children Brady and Siena; her daughter Taryn O'Neil and her husband Tim, with their daughters Olivia and Madeline; her stepsons Andre and Emil Krasich, and Emil's wife Sarah; her stepdaughter Irena Homsher and her husband Dusty, with their daughters Ava and Julia. Joan also cherished the arrival of Julia’s son, her great-grandson Tate.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Mihailo Krasich; her parents Dorothy and James Porter; her sister and best friend Judy Smiley; brother Jim Porter; and nephew Jay Parsons.
Joan’s legacy is one of love, elegance, resilience, and care. Her memory will live on through the lives she touched—both within her family circle and among those who knew her through her work. May Joan’s memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
